Job summary

Gerdau North America in Petersburg, VA, is hiring a refractory bricklayer to lay brick and refractory in steel-making vessels. You will perform repetitive duties, cut bricks, operate cranes, and prepare surfaces for repair.

The role requires 1–3 years in manufacturing, ability to work 4am–1pm with overtime, strong math and problem-solving skills, and the capacity to work in a self-directed team. The company offers comprehensive benefits and opportunities for growth.

Qualifications

• Must pass entrance exam.
• 1–3 years industrial/manufacturing experience; Brick Mason experience a plus.
• Ability to work Monday–Friday, 4am–1pm with overtime; may include weekends.
• General math skills, advanced problem solving, analytical skills; use charts, schedules, computer and touch screens; follow instructions.
• Ability to interpret measuring instruments and gauges; adjust controls in continuous process.
• Willingness to work in a self-directed team with limited supervision.
• People leadership skills and lead by example.

Responsibilities

• Lay refractory brick to build, rebuild, or re-line furnaces and other steel-making vessels.
• Operate pendant crane to move refractory materials as needed.
• Cut brick to size using pneumatic tools; ram materials and apply to surfaces.
• Remove damaged brick; clean vessel surfaces with tools.
• Spread refractories to protect bricks from heat; use trowel or gunning machine.
• Perform minor burning with torch, lance, and welding.
• Assist in training coworkers and maintaining equipment cleanliness.
