Job description

Burrow Global Fabrication is seeking a skilled Industrial Painter and Sandblaster to join our fabrication team in Jacksonville. The ideal candidate will be proficient in surface preparation, sandblasting, and applying industrial coatings to steel skid units. The role requires the ability to estimate material requirements (paints, primers, abrasives, masking materials, etc.) based on project specifications, as well as strong attention to safety, quality, and productivity in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare steel skid surfaces for coating by performing abrasive blasting (SSPC standards as applicable), masking, and masking removal.
• Inspect surfaces for defects and ensure proper surface profile and cleanliness prior to coating application.
• Apply primers, intermediate coats, and topcoats using spray, roller, or brush methods as specified.
• Mix and match paint and coatings according to manufacturer specifications and job requirements.
• Estimate material requirements for each project, including paint, primers, hardeners, thinners, masking materials, blasting media, and consumables; prepare material takeoffs and maintain accurate inventory.
• Calculate and order required materials to meet project deadlines, coordinating with purchasing as needed.
• Maintain and calibrate spray equipment, air compressors, and blasting equipment; perform routine maintenance and report any malfunctions.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations and environmental requirements (OSHA, NFPA, local regulations; handling of hazardous materials; PPE use).
• Maintain quality control by adhering to coating specifications, checking film thickness, cure times, and adhesion.
• Document work performed, materials used, and time spent on tasks; update job logs and production reports.
• Work with project teams to plan spray and blast schedules to minimize downtime and ensure on-time project completion.
• Cleanup work areas, properly dispose of waste, and maintain housekeeping standards.
• May perform basic surface preparation tasks prior to blasting (e.g., light grinding, rust removal) and assist with minor weld repairs as trained.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; relevant trade certificate or vocational training preferred.
• 5 years of experience in industrial painting and sandblasting
• Proficient in abrasive blasting (SSPC-PA or SSPC-SP standards) and surface preparation techniques for steel.
• Experience with industrial coatings systems (epoxies, polyurethanes, zinc-rich primers, elastomeric coatings) and knowledge of drying/ cure times.
• Ability to estimate material requirements and perform basic takeoffs from project specifications, drawings, and work orders.
• Familiar with coating application equipment (airless and conventional spray guns, plural-component spray systems, rollers, brushes) and associated safety procedures.
• Ability to read and interpret project specifications, painting schedules, and material data sheets (SDS/MSDS).
• Basic math and measurement skills for estimating quantities and film thickness.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to commute to and from the Jacksonville facility.
• Ability to pass a background check and drug screen as per company policy.
• Willingness to work overtime, nights, weekends, or extended shifts as needed to meet project deadlines.
