Job description

RDS is a successful, growing company who has an exciting opening for a motivated Maintenance Technician to assist in our next phase of our growth in Athens, Georgia. This position presents an opportunity to work among automated, high-tech recycling equipment and machinery to manage a facility where commingled recycling materials are sorted into bales for sale and shipment to end-market vendors where they are remanufactured into new products. Joining the RDS team will give you training and first-hand knowledge of the advancing, dynamic recycling industry on the east coast.


Job Description

A maintenance mechanic is responsible for the entire operating facility, repairs, and preventative maintenance, as well as special projects. In addition, the maintenance mechanic is responsible for maintaining all heavy equipment in the facility including balers, sort line, loaders, and forklifts. This will include regularly scheduled PM as well as minor repairs on all facility equipment.


Report to

The maintenance mechanic works under the supervision of the General Manager.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Learn Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) for the machinery you are working on - use this every time you work on or in or around that machinery.
  • Show up on time with all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and tools including radio - take part in plant morning meetings. Bring problems, issues and observations up with the Plant Manager.
  • Regular inspection of all equipment at a facility, including building, sort line, baler and rolling stock.
  • Daily review of the Daily Equipment Inspection Form.
  • Some MIG welding and fabrication.
  • Fill out and update Maintenance Log daily.
  • Perform basic preventive maintenance and inspections on equipment and trouble shoot potential problems. Ability to make repairs.
  • Ensuring the compliance of all corporate policies and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules while conducting work functions.
  • Maintaining a record of service cycles and other maintenance activities conducted.
  • Efficiently managing time and completing all tasks assigned by the supervisory authority.
  • Request quotes, complete Purchase Order requests and placing orders for spare and replacement parts and completing all necessary documentation for the same.
  • Ensure operators are completing pre-run inspections, PM, and services and review them, store files in designated folder on-site and document on internal system.
  • Report any existing damage and immediate repairs to the Plant Manager.
  • Appropriately using, maintaining, and handling all repair and testing tools and equipment.
  • Ability to take on additional tasks as needed.
  • Experience as a mechanic, able to change tires on large equipment, replace drums & brakes.
  • Responsible for prevented maintenance on all equipment and machinery.

Skills & Specifications:

  • Should have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Works well as a team member & is not afraid to ask for help or questions.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and make repairs using testing and repair all equipment as needed.
  • Ability to MIG weld and do light/medium fabrication, preferred.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and meet all specified deadlines while working independently.
  • Ability to operate a computer for small tasks like sending emails, reporting issues and concerns.

Education & Qualifications:

  • High school degree or GED equivalent for an accredited institution.
  • Bachelor's degree or an associate degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, or any other discipline with 5+ years' experience as a maintenance mechanic preferred.
  • ASE Certification is a plus.
