Job Description - Industrial Instructor III - HVAC - Where Assigned - Southern Sector (250000NJ)

Description

These positions will be assigned to facilities throughout the Southern Sector of the Department of Correction to include Norfolk, Bridgewater, Roslindale, Plymouth, and Walpole.

Duties:

  1. Test, repair, install and/or maintain various types of HVAC systems, pneumatic and DOC control systems and their architecture.
  2. Troubleshoot HVAC and related equipment by using necessary equipment and reading schematics, interpreting sequence of operation and other diagrams to identify and correct operational problems.
  3. Repair, test and install various types of heating equipment including placement of fuel supply lines, air ducts, pumps, and other parts in a heating and exhaust system.
  4. Inspect the work of the outside contractor visually to ensure compliance with agency safety code and regulations.
  5. Install and service all size air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
  6. Perform related duties such as reviewing technical literature to keep abreast of developments in the field.
  7. Attend meetings, seminars, workshops, etc. to exchange information.
  8. Maintain reports such as time and production, repair, attendance, cost analysis, etc.
  9. Provide complete and adequate coverage of the energy management systems.
  10. Perform daily inventory reports on all shop tools.
  11. Initiate a preventative maintenance program to include all HVAC equipment located at the institution.
  12. Perform EPRS on subordinate staff in compliance with established procedures.
  13. Provide training and instruction to subordinate staff on maintenance procedures.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.

** CANDIDATE MUST HAVE POSSESSION OF A REFRIGERATION TECHNICIAN LICENSE ISSUED BY THE MA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY AND A FREON RECOVERY CERTIFICATE **

**SELECTED CANDIDATE WILL HAVE TO SUCCESSFULLY PASS A PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION, DRUG SCREENING, OSHA RESPIRATOR MEDICAL EVALUATION AND BACKGROUND AND MUST ATTEND A FOUR (4) WEEK RECRUIT ACADEMY**

Preferred Qualifications:

Must have three to five years of experience working in the HVAC/Refrigeration. A strong background in pneumatic control systems for heating and ventilation. Good physical condition. Ability to drive a variety of motor vehicles.

Comments:

This is a Civil Service position. Candidate must take and pass the next Civil Service Examination for this title and score must be reached in order to be considered for a permanent appointment. Please note that salaries for union positions are determined according to the provisions of the respective collective bargaining agreement. Applicants must have no felony convictions, to include any actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609. The Massachusetts Department of Correction shall not hire anyone who may have direct contact with offenders, who has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison or other institution as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997; or has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse, or has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the above paragraph. The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with offenders or residents. The DOC urges bi-lingual applicants to apply.

Qualifications

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in industrial arts work, the major duties of which involved training or instructing, and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

  1. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in industrial arts may be substituted for one year of the required (A) experience. Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
