Job description

Duties

• Apply industrial hygiene principles to control occupational health hazards associated with shipyard industrial work situations.
• Act as the PSNS point of contact (POC) for program matters, representing PSNS at meetings with civilian and military workforce and external representatives from OPNA V and NAVSEA.
• Analyze accident and injury reports to discover trends and causes, developing recommendations for hazard reduction or elimination.
• Perform data processing, review, and analysis to ensure program-related reports are accurate and clearly presented for outside departments.
• Review and provide comments and technical guidance on local and higher authority instructions, procedures, and regulations (e.g., Uniform Industrial Process Instructions).

• Position may require travel to CONUS and OCONUS, including remote or isolated sites, and use of military and commercial aircraft.
• Work may take place in confined and enclosed spaces, both shipboard and ashore.
• Must successfully complete a pre‑appointment physical examination.

Qualifications

• At least one year of specialized experience at the GS‑05 level or equivalent in the federal service, or in the private or public sector, as a professional Industrial Hygienist or Chemical Engineer, assisting with surveys or interviews to evaluate health hazards in industrial shops or similar areas.
• In lieu of specialized experience, qualification may be achieved through:
  • Successful completion of one full year of graduate‑level education.
  • Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement.
  • A combination of education and experience that equates to one year of experience.
• For GS‑0690‑05:
  • Bachelor’s or graduate/higher degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related field; or
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering, physical science, or life science branch with required chemistry coursework; or
  • Certification from an accredited professional organization.
• For GS‑0893‑05:
  • Engineering degree from an accredited ABET program, or with requisite coursework in advanced engineering science and physics; and
  • Combination of education and experience equivalent to the engineering degree, including professional registration (Engineer Intern, Engineer in Training, Professional Engineer) or successful FE exam, or
  • Completion of at least 60 semester hours of relevant courses and related curriculum requirements.
