Job summary

General Motors in Bowling Green, KY seeks an Area Industrial Engineer to implement lean manufacturing and drive continuous improvement on the production floor. You will develop best practices, coach standardized work, and collaborate across teams to reduce waste and improve throughput.

Qualifications

Job description

The Role:

The Area Industrial Engineer will work directly with production leadership in implementing lean manufacturing systems. The main purpose of this position is to work to eliminate waste of time, money, materials, person-hours, machine time, energy and other resources that do not generate value. The ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced manufacturing environment is critical to your success at General Motors.

What You Will Do (Responsibilities):

  • Develop and implement best practices in lean manufacturing to achieve department goals and objectives. Implement common Industrial Engineering business practices and processes.
  • Support implementation and training for standardized work development.
  • Become a coach and teacher of lean manufacturing principles to the production floor.
  • Drive problem solving efforts. Work collaboratively as one team with all levels of the organization.
  • Develop relationships with production department and related personnel.
  • Design work operations that meet safety, quality, and efficiency requirements with high integrity.
  • Maintain accurate time studies through motion analysis and application of standard time data. Optimize sequence of operations and workflow.
  • Maintain accurate routings of parts to their assembly location.
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts in assigned areas through elimination of waste.
  • Evaluate bottleneck areas and support throughput and productivity improvements in assigned areas.
  • Support change management projects by developing line balance plans and participating in production trials.
  • Participate in lean manufacturing through implementation of GM’s Global Manufacturing System.
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time or higher based on business needs domestically.

Your Skills & Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field or equivalent experience 1 year of Industrial Engineering, CI experience, or Manufacturing Experience
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment with a background in CI.
  • Experience in documenting and improving standardized work.
  • Experience in implementation of lean manufacturing concepts.
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time or higher based on business needs domestically.
  • Knowledge of time study and motion analysis.
  • Self-motivated individual with continuous improvement focus.
  • Strong oral & written communication skills.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge:

  • Knowledge of human factors engineering / ergonomic analysis
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office
  • Working knowledge of computer aided drafting tools (AutoCAD / SolidWorks / Line Designer)
  • Ability to adapt to different interpersonal styles and communication methods
  • Experience working in a union or bargaining unit environment.
