The Indiana State Board of Accounts (SBOA) is seeking a Field Examiner to join our team serving Perry County and surrounding areas. In this role, you will audit local government units and help ensure financial accountability, compliance with Indiana Code, and the responsible use of taxpayer dollars. Most field examiners work from home and within their assigned district.

Salary:
Starting at $53,222/year, with potential for adjustments based on experience and progression from Field Examiner 3 (entry) to Field Examiner 1 (senior).
Position Overview:
Field Examiners perform audits of state and local governmental units to verify compliance with state and federal regulations. As a Field Examiner, you will evaluate financial records, advise elected officials, and ensure accurate and transparent public reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct financial, compliance, and federal grant audits of local governments
Examine financial statements and internal control structures
Prepare formal reports detailing audit findings
Serve as lead auditor on site-based or special audits (e.g., election recounts)
Advise elected officials on financial and management practices
Research statutes and standards relevant to each audit
Provide supervisory support and training to audit teams
Communicate findings clearly with public officials and stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field required
Substitution: Applicants without an accounting degree must pass an internal accounting exam
Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel within the district
Strong verbal, written, and analytical communication skills
Ability to interpret financial data and apply audit standards
Commitment to confidentiality and professionalism
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with government accounting or auditing
Knowledge of Indiana Code, GAAP, and GASB standards
Residency in or near Perry County is preferred
Work Environment:
Remote-based, field auditing within a defined geographic district
