Description of Work

This Gill Net Technician supports the central district biologists on finfish projects. The Technician will work on a grant funded gill net project and other state and federally funded projects as necessary. The technician will: collect fish using gill nets in Carteret and Onslow counties; use sampling gear (trawls, pots, gill nets, seine, etc.) to collect biological data from various habitats; identify, measure, weigh, collect diet samples, remove ageing structures, and examine the reproductive condition of crustaceans and finfish; tag finfish; process, record, compile, submit, and verify biological data; perform data quality control. Other duties include operating and maintaining outboard motors, boats, trailers, trucks, and other sampling equipment, lifting heavy cartons of fish, computer use, and working independently and with others. Normal work hours will be late evening and early morning. A valid driver’s license is required.
