Responsibilities

  • Assists in program planning and actively participates in activities
  • Interacts with parents, care providers, and service providers of persons with disabilities
  • Supervises and assists participants with disabilities in camps or programs
  • Modifies activities or provides accommodations per Accommodation Plans
  • Leads mini lessons on inclusion and acceptance
  • Implements accommodations and modifications as outlined on Accommodation Plans
  • Monitors participants for safety and addresses behavior concerns
  • Documents accident/incident information to the appropriate staff
  • Communicates effectively with coworkers, parents/guardians, care providers, and supervisors
  • Maintains and completes appropriate paperwork
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required
  • Skilled in working with persons with disabilities
  • Ability to take initiative and exercise sound judgment and leadership when monitoring participants
  • General knowledge of implementing programs for persons with disabilities
  • General knowledge of equipment and supplies required for programs
  • Ability to develop activity adaptations for various ability levels
  • Ability to work with persons of all ages and ability levels
  • Ability to organize and schedule time
  • Requires CPR and First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months with provided training)
  • Work in this class requires hearing and talking to communicate with the public
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record

Job description

As an inclusion counselor you will supervise and support participants with disabilities in various program settings, ensuring they can fully participate in daily activities. Support may include:

  • Supporting small groups.
  • Encouraging and promoting whole group inclusion.
  • Model inclusive strategies for participants, their peers, and your colleagues.

This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year.

  • Assists in program planning and actively participates as well as engages all participants in activities

Education and Experience

Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate degree with major course work in Therapeutic Recreation/Recreational Therapy, Education (General, Special, or Physical) or a related field.

Requires some prior experience working in programs/environments serving persons with disabilities.

Requires CPR and First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months with provided training)

Physical Requirements

Work in this class requires an employee to be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public. An employee must be able to walk unassisted and move about freely. Requires the ability to lift moderately heavy items (up to 25 lbs.) such as chairs, 6-foot tables, rolling bleachers, and event supplies. Visual acuity is needed in order to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal.

Conditions of Employment

Requires possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal history check, SBI fingerprinting, motor vehicle records check, education verification and credit history review) and satisfactory reference checks prior to employment.
