Job summary

AbbVie seeks an in-house Counsel for its Patent Prosecution group in North Chicago, IL, with a hybrid work model (on site 3+ days/week). The role develops and implements intellectual property strategies for AbbVie’s products and candidates, collaborating with cross-functional teams.

The successful candidate will draft, file, and prosecute patent applications worldwide, manage outside counsel, and participate in challenging and defending patents in post-grant proceedings.

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school with bar admission enabling in-house practice and USPTO registration.
• 2+ years of patent law experience at a law firm or life sciences company, including U.S. and foreign prosecution.
• Technical background suitable for pharmaceutical patent prosecution (small molecules and/or biologics) and a technical degree in a relevant field.
• Strong legal, analytical, communication, collaboration and people skills; able to manage complex projects to deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Maximize AbbVie’s competitive position through IP strategies.
• Provide legal counsel to cross-functional R&D and business teams on IP matters.
• Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications worldwide, including management of outside counsel.
• Challenge and defend patents in post-grant and related proceedings.
• Conduct prior art searches, analyze third-party patent positions, and perform due diligence for business development.
