Job summary

The City of Birmingham is seeking a qualified GIS Specialist to analyze and monitor GIS applications, databases, and related systems. The role involves designing and updating GIS databases, performing spatial analysis, and generating maps and reports to support urban planning and infrastructure projects.

Candidates should have GIS experience, knowledge of ArcGIS/related tools, and the ability to work with multiple data sources.

Qualifications

Work experience as a GIS Tech II in the Merit System.
Experience maintaining a GIS database with spatial analysis and data extraction; creating scripts to isolate data and map creation.
Experience reading and interpreting legal descriptions (deeds, annexations, land surveys).
Experience creating GIS relational databases (ArcGIS, MapInfo, MapOracle, Access, SQL).
Experience with database reporting software (Crystal Reports, ArcGIS data reporting).
Associate’s Degree in Geographic Information Systems or related IT field.
GIS Certificate or Certification from an accredited organization (e.g., Alabama Certified Mapper, GISCI, GISP).

Responsibilities

Provides service to internal and/or external customers.
Analyzes GIS data for urban planning, infrastructure development, public health, or election coordination.
Verifies accuracy and completeness of geospatial and tabular data records.
Creates and updates GIS databases and maps.
Produces, maintains, and distributes data layers, maps, tables, or reports.
Engages in professional development and adheres to policies and guidelines.
Collaborates on cross-department projects and communicates progress.
Conducts training by creating materials and facilitating sessions.
