Job summary

The City of Birmingham is seeking a well-qualified Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist to analyze and monitor system applications, programs, and/or databases. GIS Specialists analyze data using ArcGIS applications, maps, and tabular data to identify spatial relationships and develop thematic layers.

Incumbents create and modify system documentation, train others, and provide on-site administrator support for various applications, managing updates and user access as required.

Qualifications

• Work experience as a GIS Tech II in the Merit System.
• Experience maintaining a GIS database with spatial analysis, data extraction, and map creation."
• Experience reading and interpreting legal descriptions (e.g., deeds, annexations, land surveys, etc.).
• Experience creating GIS relational databases (e.g., ArcGIS, MapInfo, MapOracle, Access, SQL, etc.).
• Experience with database reporting software (e.g. Crystal Reports, Arc GIS data reporting, etc.).

Responsibilities

• Provides service to internal and/or external customers.
• Analyzes GIS data for urban planning, infrastructure development, public health, or election coordination using ArcGIS and tabular data.
• Verifies accuracy of geospatial and tabular data records.
• Creates, maintains, and updates a GIS database.
• Produces, maintains, and distributes data layers, maps, or reports.
• Engages in professional development and knowledge of current practices.
• Collaborates on cross-department projects and communicates progress.
• Conducts training by creating materials and sessions.
