Job summary

Durham County Government's Public Health department seeks an Environmental Health Specialist to inspect and enforce health laws across facilities such as food services and childcare.

The role requires a strong foundation in environmental health, inspection techniques, and the ability to educate and regulate establishments while maintaining records and cooperating with public health teams.

Qualifications

• Graduation from a four-year college with 30 semester hours in physical or biological sciences and two years' environmental health exposure.
• Four-year or Master’s degree in environmental health from an NEHA-accredited program with one year of experience in environmental health.
• Appointees must apply for registration as an Environmental Health Specialist Intern within 60 days of employment and may remain registered until registration as REHS.

Responsibilities

• Perform State-mandated, unannounced sanitation inspections of Food, Lodging, and Institution, Childcare and Tattoo facilities.
• Investigate complaints from the public and referrals concerning suspected environmental health violations.
• Complete and maintain records of inspections and investigations.
• Educate facility owners/operators on Environmental Health requirements during visits.
• Take appropriate permit actions when facilities fail to comply with sanitation standards or health hazards exist.
• Conduct office duties involving correspondence with the public.
• Collect routine water samples for regulated facilities.
• Provide field training for new employees and other health personnel.
• Participate in continuing education to retain REHS status (minimum 15 hours per year).
• Perform other duties as assigned.
