Job summary

Virginia Department of Corrections seeks an institutional physician to operate a Doctor’s Office Practice inside Haynesville Correctional Center in Richmond County, VA. You will deliver medical care, manage medications, and work with a nurse manager and nursing staff to support inmate health services.

The role emphasizes diagnosis, treatment of acute illnesses, education, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, with a potential $30,000 sign-on bonus or up to $60,000 in student loan

Qualifications

• Diagnose and treat injuries, diseases, and deformities; understand treatments, drugs and preventive care.
• Extensive knowledge of mental illness.
• Knowledge of DSM diagnostic criteria.
• Knowledge of professional and ethical standards of practice.
• Ability to function as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
• Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

• Provide medical care and medication management to offenders with nursing staff support.
• Analyze histories, symptoms, and diagnostic information to develop diagnoses.
• Diagnose or treat acute health care problems.
• Prescribe medications considering efficacy, safety, and cost.
• Educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses.
• Be a primary member of the institution’s health services multidisciplinary team.
