Job summary

Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in Maine seeks a Child Protective Services Caseworker to protect children across the state. You will perform professional social work in child protection, engage families to assess safety, and build teams with resources to support safe solutions for children.

The role requires a minimum of a Bachelor's in social work or related field and eligibility for LSW licensure.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in Social Work or related field with coursework in behavioral/science areas.
  • Eligible for conditional or full LSW licensure per Maine State Board requirements.
  • Understanding of child protection and family services principles.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional social work in child protection, services, and adoption.
  • Engage families to assess safety and plan for safety, well-being, and permanency.
  • Create teams with family, staff, and community resources to support safe solutions.
  • Reach safety decisions with input from families and community stakeholders.
  • Assess child safety, abuse, neglect, family strengths, and functioning.
  • Separate dangerous caregivers from children when court action is needed.
  • Plan for children focusing on safety, family preservation, or permanent placement.
  • Maintain accurate case records and documentation; prepare reports and letters.
  • Follow federal/state laws and timelines; conduct case planning and, if needed, petition for custody.
