Pay Range Information

Chapman University is required to provide a reasonable estimate ofthe compensation range for this position. This range takes intoaccount a variety of factors that are considered in makingcompensation decisions, including experience, skills, knowledge,abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and otherbusiness and organizational needs. Salary offers are determinedbased on the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, aswell as internal equity and other internal factors. The anticipatedpay range is not a promise of a particular wage.

Job Description Summary

The Assistant Director of Law Career Services serves as an integralpart of the Career Services Office ( CSO ) under the supervision ofthe Assistant Dean for Career Services. The CSO is responsible forproviding a full suite of personalized services to law students andalumni, helping them create, execute, and meet career goals andobjectives. The Assistant Director will work closely with theAssistant Dean to implement strategies for career advising,employer outreach, and programming services for law students andalumni. Candidates eager to join a dedicated CSO team and providepersonalized guidance to our students are encouraged to apply. Thisposition is a full-time, year-round (12 month) administrativeposition.

Responsibilities

Student Advising/Training & Communication :
Student Advising/Training:
  • Meet with and advise/coach law students and alumni individuallythrough all stages of career exploration, job search preparation,and professional development. Responsibilities include:
    • Review and provide feedback on student resumes, cover letters,and other materials.
    • Prepare students for interviews, conduct mock interviews, andprovide specific feedback.
    • Identify candidates for open positions and encourage studentsto apply.
    • Follow up with students after interviews to debrief andstrategize next steps.
    • Advise students on traditional and alternative/non-traditionalcareer paths.
    • Draft resources and guides related to career and professionaldevelopment topics.
  • Develop and conduct programs and skills development workshops,including Professional Development Graduation Requirementprograms.
  • Meet individual goals outlined in the most recent version ofCSO’s Strategic Plan (the “Strategic Plan”); Assistant Dean willreview metrics at the intervals noted in the Strategic Plan.
Student Communication:
  • Maintain consistent and regular communication with students tofacilitate ongoing engagement.
  • Work with CSO team to track and monitor student engagement,identify unengaged students, and conduct individualized outreach tosuch students.
  • Work with CSO team to create and implement communication planto promote CSO programs and services to students.
  • Draft communications, including newsletters and jobalerts.
Employer Outreach :
  • Meet with targeted employers one-on-one to increase employmentopportunities for students and alumni, as directed by AssistantDean and as outlined in the Strategic Plan, to progressivelyincrease employment numbers at-graduation and 10 months aftergraduation in Bar Admission Required and Juris Doctor Advantagefull-time/long-term positions.
  • Research and identify employers for outreach in designatedstrategic areas (as outlined in the Strategic Plan) and connectwith employers to cultivate expanded legal employmentopportunities.
  • Respond in timely fashion (within 24 business hours) toemployer inquiries, onboard new employers, and regularlycommunicate with employers throughout the candidate searchprocess.
  • Create and implement processes to ensure employers receive thehighest level of service in interactions with CSO .
  • Meet individual goals outlined in the Strategic Plan. AssistantDean will review metrics at intervals noted in the StrategicPlan.
Assist with career services administrationresponsibilities.
R ecruiting Program:
  • Collaborate with CSO team to implement all aspects ofrecruiting programs, including student and employer communications,interview scheduling, and database management.
Employment Data Collection:
  • Assist with employment data collection process for internal andexternal reporting.
  • Assist with preparing responses to surveys and questionnaires,including employment reports submitted to the ABA, U.S. News, andNALP .
Other:
  • Review and post job postings on the online job board.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Dean and other administrators tomaintain interactive student database and develop and maintainother career services databases for students and graduates.
  • Assist in administration and marketing of external careerconferences and job fairs.
  • Act as departmental liaison with student organizations.
  • Participate in professional development training led by NALPand other organizations to improve coaching/advising skills.
Required Qualifications

The following experience and education are required:
  • Must demonstrate transferable knowledge and skills in lawcareer services if recent employment is not directly related to theduties of the position.
  • Familiarity with the Southern California legal job market withproven experience in growing employer contacts and translating theminto employment opportunities.
  • Current knowledge of and the ability to remain abreast ofemployment trends in general and of the legal market locally,nationally, and globally in both traditional and non-traditionalemployment.
  • Understanding of legal education with comprehension of legalacademic requirements and requirements for entrance to the statebar.
  • Knowledge of best practices in legal recruiting and currenttrends in the legal profession.
  • Ability to support students, develop a good rapport withstudents, and engage in candid discussions about various aspects oftheir job searches.
  • Proven ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, anddatabase software, preferably of Microsoft Office Suiteapplications. Technical ability to learn and use enterprisesoftware.
  • Ability to positively represent Chapman University and ChapmanUniversity Fowler School of Law.
  • Ability to proactively market the law school, students, andalumni to attorneys, firms, corporations, government agencies, thejudiciary, public interest organizations, and other potentialemployers.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience working withother team members to devise, analyze, modify, implement, andevaluate programs, materials, and procedures.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills; experience ininterpreting data and using information to guide informeddecision-making.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonalskills to interact, communicate, and persuade diverse groups andindividuals at all levels.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret laws, policies, andprocedures, provide appropriate and accurate guidance, and ensurecompliance.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills toprioritize multiple and competing demands and complete them in atimely manner.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and usediscretion in matters pertaining to all aspects of officeadministration and student/alumni communication.
  • Ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy, maintainconfidentiality, and follow FERPA regulations.
  • Ability to work occasional weekends and evening hours, asneeded.
  • Ability to travel locally to conduct employer outreach in theSouthern California legal community and travel more extensively onoccasion, as required by the position.
Desired Qualifications

Assistant Director – the following experience and educationare required:
  • Juris Doctor degree.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a judicialclerkship, law firm, or other legal work setting (e.g., in-houselegal department) as a licensed attorney, or position thatotherwise provides experience highly relevant to the duties of theposition.
