Job summary

Community Blood Center in Kansas City, MO seeks a skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist to perform complex serologic testing on donor and patient samples. You will prepare reagents, report results and provide consultation on immunohematology matters while maintaining strict quality and regulatory standards.

The role may include pre-analytic and analytic procedures, with documentation of corrective actions and participation in quality processes.

• Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology, or
• Bachelor's Degree in a Physical, Chemical, or Biological Science with ASCP/ RIBC certification.

Responsibilities

$2,500.00 Sign On Bonus available.

Schedule - Friday through Monday - 10 hour overnight shift. Not on call.

This position is responsible for performing simple to complex serologic investigations on donor and patient samples. Precisely and accurately performs and interprets technical procedures to satisfy referrals and requests. Provides consultation services to clients. Supports and promotes organizational quality efforts through communicating problems relating to products, processes, or quality system.

The position may also perform limited patient testing as authorized by the Laboratory Director and in accordance with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Primary Duties, Responsibilities or Activities Required by Job (including but not limited to)

• As defined by CLIA/NYSDOH, this position is responsible for pre-analytic, analytic procedures, maintaining records of tests, and for reporting test results in a high complexity laboratory.
• This position performs only those tests that are authorized by the CLIA/NYSDOH laboratory director and performs only those tests that require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities.
• Perform serological testing on patient and donor samples received for consultation
• Prepare laboratory reagents and chemicals
• Performs and documents laboratory quality control tasks and proficiency testing in the same manner as patient/donor samples
• Performstasks associated with red cell and/or platelet antibody detection
• Identification, testing and procurement of antigen negative donor units
• Maintenance of rare donor inventories, as needed
• Consult with internal and external clients on issues related to immunohematology
• Maintain accurate, concurrent, and complete records under strict time limits utilizing computerized systems.
• Recognizes and reports problems encountered during performance of job tasks including equipment malfunction, deviation from standard operating procedure, unusual results, and discrepancy in test controls or controls outside established normal limits.
• Follows laboratory policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
• Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
• Reviews draft reports, as applicable.

Other Secondary Functions:

• Participates in educational programs to meet national or state regulatory requirements
• Makes recommendations for improvement in processes and practices in the laboratory
• Assists with equipment maintenance and quality control testing
• Reports and bills for patient test results
• Knowledge of other Laboratory Information Systems as appropriate
• Follows Good Manufacturing Processes at all times, with attention to detail.
• Performs platelet serology and crossmatch where applicable
• Performs flow cytometry testing and automated phenotyping where applicable.
• Provide on-call and weekend coverage on a rotational basis with support from supervisory and managerial staff, as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Minimum Education & Experience:

Education:

• Associates Degree in Medical Technology; or
• Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology; or
• Bachelor's Degree in a Physical, Chemical, or Biological Science (RIBC - with ASCP certification).

Experience:

0-1 years of relevant technical and service-related industry experience that has supplied the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology.

Related Experience:

• Medical Laboratory Scientist ASCP Certification, Blood Banking ASCP Certification or equivalent, Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) ASCP Certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge:

• Working knowledge of clinical laboratory practices.
• Knowledge of AABB and FDA Immunohematology / Transfusion Medicine Regulations
• Knowledge of a variety of software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
• Working knowledge of LIS and BECS.
• Working Knowledge of all institutional and personnel policies, confidentiality, and Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).
