Job summary

The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene seeks a City Medical Specialist to join the Immunization Bureau. The role involves reviewing medical exemption requests for childcare and school immunizations, coordinating outbreak responses, and advising on exposure management and prophylaxis.

The physician will collaborate with SCU and Surveillance units and may participate in emergency response activities.

Qualifications

• Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in New York; and either a Board Certification in an American Specialty Board or a current approved application for admission to the certifying examination.
• To be assigned to Assignment Level II requires one year of satisfactory experience in the specialty; Assignment Level III requires a Master’s in Public Health and at least two years of epidemiology experience.
• Assignment Level IV requires residency and subspecialty board certification/eligibility and related fellowship experience.

Responsibilities

• Review medical exemption requests and verify validity with physicians and BOI staff.
• Serve as medical liaison for exposures and provide guidance on contact identification and immunization guidance.
• Coordinate referrals for prophylaxis, titers, and outbreaks; document updates in Maven surveillance system.
• Participate in BOI activities and emergency response efforts as needed.

Medical license to practice medicine in New York

Board Certification in an American Specialty Board

Master’s degree in Public Health or equivalent
