Job summary

Tahirih Justice Center is seeking an intern to provide support to staff attorneys serving immigrant survivors of gender-based violence. The role emphasizes trauma-informed, interdisciplinary collaboration and direct client contact in complex cases.

The intern will assist with intake, research, and referrals, while gaining exposure to litigation support, policy work, and training activities across a national nonprofit. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States.

Qualifications

• At least 2 years of direct legal services experience, ideally in immigration removal defense.
• Experience working on asylum, U-Visa, T-visa, VAWA, and SIJS applications.
• Strong legal analysis, written and oral advocacy and presentation skills.
• Responsible, self-initiating, and able to work collaboratively in a team-based environment.
• Excellent organizational, time management and prioritization abilities.
• Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.
• Experience supporting survivors of violence and trauma from diverse backgrounds.
• Commitment to Tahirih’s values, equity and social justice.

Responsibilities

• Advise, counsel, and represent immigrant survivors of gender-based violence in legal matters before DHS, DOS, and DOJ.
• Provide brief advice and intake, maintaining a caseload and coordinating with pro bono attorneys.
• Participate on an interdisciplinary team centering client voices in representation.
• Collaborate within a team structure and communicate effectively with clients and partners.
• Engage in trauma-informed, client-centered service delivery with Social Services.
• Contribute to grant proposals, reports and policy advocacy pieces as needed.
• Support recruitment, supervision, and training of pro bono attorneys and interns.
