Job Title:
Associate Attorney – Immigration & Crimmigration Law

Job Overview:
A respected law firm based in Des Moines, IA is seeking an Associate Attorney with a passion for defending clients at the intersection of immigration and criminal law, an area often referred to as “crimmigration.” This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful legal work that impacts clients’ lives on a fundamental level. The attorney will work closely with seasoned legal professionals in a collaborative environment to handle cases involving immigration consequences of criminal activity, appellate proceedings, and post-conviction relief.

Duties:

  1. Conduct comprehensive legal research and provide analysis on complex immigration and criminal matters
  2. Prepare and revise legal documents including motions, briefs, and pleadings
  3. Advise clients on immigration status implications tied to criminal charges or convictions
  4. Manage and maintain case files, ensuring compliance with procedural standards
  5. Partner with other legal professionals on case strategies and litigation plans
  6. Monitor and interpret developments in legislation and legal precedents relevant to crimmigration
  7. Represent clients in court proceedings and before immigration authorities when necessary

Requirements:

  1. Licensed to practice law in Iowa, or ability to obtain licensure promptly
  2. Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred
  3. Demonstrated experience or strong interest in immigration, criminal defense, or appellate law
  4. Comfortable working with diverse populations in sensitive or high-stakes cases
  5. Strong interpersonal skills and client service orientation

Education:

Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school

Certifications:

Active Bar membership in Iowa (or eligible for admission)

  2. Strong legal writing and document drafting capabilities
