Job description

The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform include, but are not limited to:

Duties Description

The Office for New Americans (ONA) was established to assist newcomers to New York State who are eager to contribute to our economy and become part of the New York State community. ONA helps New Americans fully participate in civic and economic life. The role of the Community Immigrant Specialist 1 in ONA includes:

  1. Monitoring contractual documents and preparing compliance reports.
  2. Ensuring procedures for providing services are monitored and adjusted, including site visits.
  3. Responding to information requests from various stakeholders.
  4. Meeting with individuals or groups to provide information and answer questions.
  5. Providing information and referrals on immigration issues, US citizenship, and assistance programs.
  6. Developing partnerships across the ONA network and state agencies.
  7. Coordinating immigration workshops across New York State.
  8. Targeting outreach to new immigrant populations based on current data.
  9. Providing ombudsman services and responding to constituent concerns.
  10. Following up with federal, state, and local agencies.
  11. Referring clients to legal immigration assistance providers.
  12. Providing legal assistance to help immigrants transition to life in the US.
  13. Collaborating with other agencies to support immigrant services.
  14. Ensuring social and economic assistance is accessible to new Americans and their families.
  15. Providing technical assistance and professional development for contracted organizations.
  16. Performing other related duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • Six years of experience assisting or helping constituents understand and participate in public and private programs, including at least one year in human services or citizenship attainment.
  • Fluency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding an appropriate language at a native level, with cultural sensitivity.
  • A bachelor’s degree may substitute for four years of experience; a master’s degree may substitute for five years.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with immigrant populations.
  • Experience with contract or grant compliance and monitoring.
