Be responsible for processes and procedures related to Baker Hughes' customs clearance. The Customs team supports the business as the importer of record and oversees internal controls that support efficient customs operations and align with Baker Hughes IET customs standards.

As a Customs Compliance Specialist, you will be responsible for maintaining an effective, efficient, and compliant customs operation program for Baker Hughes IET entities.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Acting as the primary contact for customs operations, facilitating process improvements, and addressing queries from internal stakeholders, customers, and vendors.
  2. Processing notified imports promptly and resolving related inquiries.
  3. Filing customs declarations and issuing clearance instructions to approved customs brokers according to the business model.
  4. Preparing customs documentation and resolving transactional issues with brokers and logistics providers.
  5. Assessing and improving customs processes for efficiency and quality.
  6. Retaining customs documents per regulations and policies, documenting processes as per standards.
  7. Managing customs regimes and special programs, ensuring accurate duty and VAT liabilities.
  8. Reviewing customs declarations and broker invoices post-entry, identifying defects, and suggesting improvements.
  9. Filing accurate customs declarations timely, ensuring regulatory compliance.
  10. Monitoring shipments, resolving issues, and supporting complex transactions.
  11. Providing guidance on customs topics like valuation, origin, HS classification, and regulations, collaborating with International Trade Compliance as needed.
  12. Supporting Customs Special Programs and Free Trade Agreement management.
  13. Reporting on KPIs and analyzing global trade processes.

Major challenges include establishing and improving local customs processes, overseeing daily operations, and working with cross-functional teams to drive improvements while balancing commercial and regulatory requirements.

Performance measures focus on process improvements, minimizing import/export exceptions, reporting, compliance training, maximizing duty reduction programs, and regulatory adherence.

To succeed, you should have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of customs compliance experience, or a High School Diploma/GED with 8-10 years of experience.
  • Knowledge of local customs and regulatory requirements (CBSA, CARM, etc.).
  • Leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Experience leading teams and processes.
  • A track record of teamwork, integrity, responsibility, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure.
  • Problem-solving and project management skills.
  • Desire to obtain a Licensed Customs Broker or equivalent certification, if not already certified.
