Position Overview

2025-26 IDRH Scholars in Digital Humanities

The Institute for Digital Research in the Humanities (IDRH) invites applications for the 2026-2027 cohort of IDRH Scholars in Digital Humanities.

The Digital Humanities Scholars are a cohort of students from across the university committed to thinking and working together for an academic year.

Joining with the IDRH Fellows, which is for faculty, staff and graduate students, the IDRH Scholars program is designed to contribute to an ongoing, institution-wide conversation about issues in the public and digital humanities.

Scholars will work on projects, attend events, and learn digital methods.

About The Award

The IDRH Scholars program provides funding for undergraduate students at the University of Kansas to work with IDRH staff on Digital Humanities projects.

The program has two main objectives:

1. Give students the opportunity to learn about digital humanities.
2. Recognize IDRH faculty for mentorship efforts and encourage them to mentor undergraduate students.

The award provides for THREE positions that will offer 75 paid hours at $15/hour in the Fall semester, with the possibility of renewal for the Spring semester.

At the end of the experience, the mentors and scholars will give a public presentation. In addition to gaining valuable experience, this is a great professional development opportunity that will look excellent on a resume.

About the Job

The IDRH Scholars will contribute to digital humanities research projects led by faculty at the University of Kansas. This assignment presents KU students with an opportunity to learn collaborative research skills, and to gain a better understanding of technical and ethical issues related to working with digital methods to address humanities research questions. This opportunity is for the Fall 2026 semester, with the possibility of renewal in the Spring 2027 semester and is open to KU undergraduate students.

Work Schedule Expectations

The student will work approximately 5 hours per week for the Fall 2026 semester. A regular work schedule will be determined at the beginning of the semester. The work will include regular check-ins with the supervisor for updates and guidance, as well as for mentorship and learning. The student may occasionally attend team meetings with other members of the IDRH team.

Required Qualifications

1. Demonstrated interest in humanities research, as evidenced in application materials. This may include, but is not limited to museum studies, history, anthropology, literary studies, geographic information systems, digital exhibits or archives, or web development.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Demonstrated ability to learn and work with new software tools and platforms, as evidenced by application materials.
2. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively, as evidenced by application materials.
3. Professional experience in the application of digital methods to humanities research, as evidenced by application materials.

Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre‑enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

At the end of the experience, the mentors and scholars will give a public presentation.

Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
