Position Function:

The ICU technician position provides primary care to all emergency patients and advanced care for critical patients of the Animal Health Center (AHC), along with support for hospitalized patients. These technicians are responsible for executing the wishes of the veterinary medical team and monitoring patient response, legally limited to patient care but not diagnosis, prescribing, or surgery. They also instruct veterinary students and veterinary technology students.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Providing intensive care treatment and monitoring for critically ill patients.
  2. Supporting the care of emergency and referral patients after hours.
  3. Instructing and evaluating veterinary students on healthcare procedures.
  4. Acting as senior manager of ICU and Emergency Service in the absence of faculty or house officers, overseeing case management.
  5. Maintaining medical records per college policy and accreditation standards.
  6. Managing supplies and disinfecting the ICU and related areas.
  7. Using diagnostic and therapeutic equipment appropriately.
  8. Performing diagnostic procedures and sample submissions.
  9. Supervising or administering anesthesia during procedures.
  10. Handling animals and instructing others on techniques and protocols.
  11. Communicating professionally with stakeholders, including the public and staff.
  12. Monitoring access to pharmaceuticals and supplies after hours.
  13. Working various shifts to ensure 24/7 coverage.
  14. Performing additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree in Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Technology.
  • At least 2 years of direct experience.
  • Applicants demonstrating potential to meet requirements within 12 months will be considered.
  • Substitutions allowed with equivalent experience or education approved by HR.

Trainees must possess a veterinary technology or technician degree and obtain certification within 1 year. Level I and II technicians must meet specific certification and experience criteria.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Certified Veterinary Technician (AD) or Technologist (BS)
  • Specialty Certification in Emergency and Critical Care

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Recordkeeping and report preparation skills.
  • Proficiency with computers and software.
  • Database management and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Understanding of HR processes relevant to a public institution.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

No unusual physical requirements; some heavy lifting; mostly indoor work. Routine deadlines with seasonal work volume variations. Job involves sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects, and occasional standing, walking, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Visual acuity for print and electronic information is required.
