Job summary

Littleton Equine Medical Center in Littleton, CO is seeking a Certified Veterinary Technician for a full-time graveyard shift. You will assist veterinarians with emergency cases and provide daily nursing and medical treatments in the ICU.

The position requires equine handling experience, a veterinary tech license, and AVMA-accredited training with VTNE completion. Overnight 12-hour shifts include comprehensive benefits and a supportive team.

Qualifications

  • Basic level of horse handling experience required.
  • Preference given to credentialed technicians who have graduated from an AVMA accredited school of veterinary technology and successfully completed the VTNE.

Responsibilities

  • Daily treatments and nursing care of hospitalized equine patients, including elective procedures and critical care.
  • Prepares drugs, fluids, and CRIs for daily treatment.
  • Administers medications via PO, IM, SQ, and PR routes.
  • Perform venipuncture, IV catheter placement, and oversee bloodwork where needed.
  • Maintain ICU biosecurity protocols and clean environments.

Schedule is three - 12hr overnight shifts.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate is a Certified/Registered/Licensed Veterinary Technician with equine experience. All candidates with an equine medical background are encouraged to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Daily treatments and nursing care of all hospitalized patients including elective procedures, critical care, and isolation.
  • Prepares drugs, fluids, and CRIs for daily treatment.
  • PO, IM, SQ, PR medication administration.
  • Venipuncture including blood draw, IV medication administration, and IV catheter placement.
  • Ability to run bloodwork and recognize abnormalities.
  • Maintain appropriate biosecurity in ICU and isolation areas by cleaning as necessary. Works with veterinarians to implement and enforce biosecurity protocols.
  • Appropriately stock ICU areas with drugs and supplies as needed. Maintains an accurate controlled drug log.
  • Accurately maintain digital medical record; complete paper forms as needed.
  • Assists veterinarians with euthanasia and necropsies as needed.
  • Trains intern veterinarians, technician students, and new employees in ICU/nursing techniques and protocols.
  • Client communication as needed.
  • Maintains current veterinary technician certification/license/registration if applicable.
QualificationsEducation/Experience

Basic level of horse handling experience required. Preference given to credentialed technicians who have graduated from an AVMA accredited school of veterinary technology and successfully completed the VTNE.

Language Ability

Ability to understand both written and verbal instructions regarding patient care and treatments. Ability to appropriately chart patient parameters, subjective observations, and independently utilize provided resources for standard operating procedures. Ability to effectively communicate and respond to questions from managers, doctors, and clients.

Math Ability

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as drug doses, dilutions, percentages, rate, ratio and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, add subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions.

Computer Skills

Computer literacy in common computer software programs.

Special Skills

Equine restraint/handling and horsemanship skills.
