Job summary

SMG System Medical Group in Martinsburg, WV is seeking an experienced APRN for the Intensive Care Unit. You will manage comprehensive critical care for patients and collaborate with the Critical Care team to order tests, interpret results, and develop individualized plans of care.

The role requires a Master’s in Nursing, WV APRN licensure, and national certification, with BLS and FCCS or equivalent ALS training.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a CCNE-accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
  • National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure as an APRN in West Virginia.
  • BLS Certification required with Advanced Life Support training as needed.
  • FCCS Certification required immediately upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Manages comprehensive and individualized care for ICU patients and families.
  • Orders tests or consults per protocol and scope of practice.
  • Performs, interprets, and communicates diagnostic results.
  • Collaborates with Critical Care and inter-professional teams.
  • Develops care plans including discharge planning and referrals.
  • Participates in rounds and supports timely patient disposition.
  • Recognizes unstable or complex situations and initiates appropriate interventions.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in patient care.
  • Ensures safe use of equipment and documents care plans clearly.
  • Mentors nursing staff and promotes education across practice levels.

Additional Job Description:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’sDegree in Nursing.

2. National Certification by one of the recognized APRNCertification Centers.

3. Licensure or eligibility for licensure, as a professionalRegistered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in WestVirginia.

4. BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Supporttraining at the discretion of the department.

5. Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (FCCS) Certificationrequired immediately upon hire (based on class availability).

EXPERIENCE:

1. Eligible new graduates will be considered.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

1. ACGNP certification or ACNP preferred, but would considerFNP.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Acute care, critical care experience preferred.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements describedhere are intended to describe the general nature of work beingperformed by people assigned to this position. They are notintended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of allresponsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Manages comprehensive and individualized care for patients andfamilies in the Inpatient/Critical care phase ofhospitalization

2. With the collaboration of Critical Care staff or by followingestablished protocol and/or scope of practice and privilegingguidelines, orders additional tests or consults to medically managethe patient.

3. Performs, interprets and communicates results of diagnostictests.

4. Consults and communicates with Critical Care andinter-professional services regarding abnormal findings in theevaluations of patients.

5. Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care forpatients that include teaching, establishing disposition/dischargeplanning and/or necessary referral to other members of the healthcare team.

6. Participates in physician/team rounds

7. Identifies unstable or complex patient care situations andfacilitates appropriate intervention with appropriateresources.

8. Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effectiveemergency care

9. Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skillsin clinical decision making by the identification, evaluation andmanagement of the individual needs of patients/families

10. Demonstrates the ability to utilize basic equipment in a safemanner.

11. Facilitates patient discharge disposition or transfer bycoordination of appropriate services

12. Bases decisions made/actions taken on relevant scientificprinciples, established standards of care and/or researchfindings.

13. Promotes an environment that facilitates learning by respondingto appropriate patient/family preferences, priorities and readinessto learn.

14. Updates own knowledge base throughout the year.

15. Completes all identified clinical competencies.

16. Mentors nursing personnel in all levels of clinicalpractice.

17. Communicates effectively with patients/families, providersinterdisciplinary teams and ancillary services at all levels toassure coordinated efficient patient care.

18. Documents the plan of care, interventions and evaluations in aclear and concise manner.

19. Adheres to the established Performance Expectations for WVUMEmployees in the areas of People, Service, Performance Improvement,and Shared Values & Culture

20. Performs initial assessment and develops plan for newadmissions in conjunction with the critical care attendingphysician and/or team.

21. Ensures patient summary (i.e. Problem List) and orders arecurrent, comprehensive and accurate.

22. Ensures appropriate transition to next team when patient isready to leave the ICU

23. Performs appropriate procedures as directed by Critical CareTeam and/or within scope of practice.
