Job description

The Ice Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all aspects of ice maintenance and operations at Braemar Arena. This position provides work direction to a team of full-time staff and provides direct supervision to over 30 part-time ice technicians, ensuring high-quality ice conditions and safe, efficient operations of resurfacing equipment, refrigeration systems, and related assets. The Ice Operations Supervisor also supports facility operations in collaboration with the Arena Management Team.

Scope of Impact:
The duties and responsibilities of this job are performed with latitude for independent judgment in accordance with Department and City policies, Federal, State, and local regulations. Work is subject to periodic review by the General Manager and Assistant Manager, who provide approval of recommendations and guidance on assignments and priorities. This position provides work direction to full-time ice staff and directly supervises part-time ice technicians and contributes to operational planning, staff development, and facility event readiness.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides work direction to a team of full-time staff and directly supervises over 30 part-time Zamboni drivers and ice technicians.
  • Develops seasonal staffing plans, assigns shifts, approves timecards, and provides direct feedback and coaching to assigned employees.
  • Participates in hiring, onboarding, and evaluating staff. Develops and maintains ice maintenance standard operating procedures and training programs for part-time and seasonal staff.
  • Oversees daily operations of ice maintenance, including resurfacing schedules, ice depth monitoring, edging, and seasonal rink build/takedown projects.
  • Ensures proper operation, maintenance, and repair of ice resurfacing equipment and related mechanical tools.
  • Manages ice maintenance scheduling, ice condition reporting, and equipment records using facility management software.
  • Coordinates with refrigeration contractors for preventive maintenance and repair of the ice plant and related systems.
  • Leads all ice-related readiness for large-scale events, tournaments, and special programming.
  • Provides ice quality reports and communicates concerns or areas requiring attention to appropriate staff.
  • Assists with general facility upkeep to ensure safe, clean, and welcoming conditions in public spaces.
  • Manages inventory of ice maintenance supplies and communicates procurement needs to management.
  • Provides input into ice maintenance and staffing budget planning, monitors expenses, and supports cost control
  • Assists with snow removal as needed and may operate light equipment during winter months.
  • Assists with other facility projects such as Braemar Field Sports Dome takedown/set-up and sport court installation.
  • Participates in interdepartmental planning meetings and acts as a key contributor to the Arena Leadership team.
  • Participates in the facility on-call rotation to include periodic weekend coverage.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state and federal workplace regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

The position requires a minimum of three years of experience in ice maintenance, including experience operating and maintaining ice resurfaces and supervising staff. Customer service experience is required. Candidates must possess experience providing work direction and training to employees or hold formal training in supervision. A valid driver’s license is required. Candidates must be able to obtain Certified Ice Technician (CIT) certification within two years of hire.

Desired Qualifications:
Two-year technical degree; Certified Ice Technician (CIT) designation; experience with ammonia-based refrigeration systems; experience maintaining four or more ice surfaces; experience working in a high-volume public facility; supervisory experience over large part-time teams; knowledge of tournament/event operations; experience using ice arena facility management software platforms.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Desirable for Successful Job Performance:

  • Knowledge of methods, practices, and equipment used in ice rink operations and maintenance.
  • Strong understanding of ice plant and refrigeration systems and the ability to identify and escalate issues promptly.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining resurfacing and edging equipment
  • Experience managing operational tasks and maintenance records using ice arena facility maintenance software platform(s).
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, plan schedules, and adapt to changing event demands.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills; ability to motivate and support part-time staff.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office and facility work order systems.
  • High level of professionalism and customer service orientation.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed to support facility operations.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

Requires daily lifting, pushing, or pulling of up to 80 pounds and occasional lifting beyond that with assistance. Frequent walking, bending, and climbing stairs. Work may be performed on cold surfaces or in cold environments for extended periods. May occasionally work at heights using lifts or ladders.

Working Conditions:

Work occurs indoors within a cold arena environment and outdoors during snow removal and event support. Some tasks may expose the employee to slip/falls, loud noise, temperature extremes, cuts, and potentially hazardous substances (refrigerants, fuel, cleaning supplies). Schedule includes early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays. Position serves as on-call contact for ice maintenance issues.
