Job summary

The Village of Schaumburg is hiring a Building Inspector (Community Development) to enforce building codes and ordinances, evaluate plans, and assist departments during emergencies. You will inspect construction projects and existing structures, maintain records of code changes, and coordinate with the Building Supervisor.

The role requires a high school diploma, two years of construction experience, ICC certification within one year, a valid driver’s license, and strong computer skills.

Qualifications

• Education equivalent to a high school diploma.
• Two years of experience in building construction and knowledge of approved methods, materials, practices, and safeguards.
• ICC certification required and may be obtained within one year from hire.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Proficiency with current computer technology and job-specific software.

Responsibilities

• Enforces all applicable adopted building codes.
• Performs required inspections of construction and installation of materials and equipment in new and existing buildings and structures.
• Organizes daily work schedule and completes inspections; ensures timely inspections.
• Issues notices and seeks resolutions for code violations; testifies at hearings when required.
• Compares plans/drawings for deviations from approved designs.
• Posts notices of inspection and may issue occupancy stops.
• Investigates complaints related to construction or maintenance of property.
• Assists contractors, tradespeople, and the public with code requirements.
• Attends courses to maintain ICC certifications applicable to the position.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
