Job summary

RES is seeking an Industrial Controls and SCADA (IC&S) Engineer - Generation in Denver, CO to lead a comprehensive generation controls program for renewable power plants. You will guide design, testing, and commissioning of HMI, EMS, PPC, and DCS systems, aligning with ISO rules and utility requirements.

You will interact with engineering, procurement, and construction teams, plus clients and subcontractors, providing expertise and ensuring project milestones and QA/QC goals are met.

Qualifications

  • Requires Associate’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent with 2+ years relevant experience or 4+ years in a similar role.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • 4+ years of IC&S experience.
  • Willingness to travel 5–15% domestically and internationally.
  • Strong knowledge of utility-scale power, renewables, and control architectures.
  • Proven experience with Generation Controls, data acquisitions, and comms networking.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficient with Excel and control system modeling tools.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as SME for Generation Controls in wind, energy storage, and solar projects.
  • Oversee control system designs including NARRATIVES, HMI, BOMs, and wiring diagrams.
  • Lead IC&S meetings, track deliverables, and coordinate testing activities.
  • Develop QA specifications to meet RES standards across project phases.
  • Ensure installations meet RES, client, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage QAQC processes for Generation Controls across projects.
  • Coordinate with engineering, procurement, and construction teams.
  • Provide training plans for O&M post-commissioning.
  • Support warranty and post-project services.

Summary:

The Industrial Controls and SCADA (IC&S) Engineer - Generation acts as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) and is responsible for creating and executing a Generation Controls engineering program (which includes HMI displays, Energy Management Systems, Top Level/Master Power Plant Controls (PPC), and other Distributed Control System (DCS) functions) for the generation controls side of utility scale renewable power plants throughout all phases of new construction projects. This role provides SME review and guidance to the Engineering Delivery and Project Execution teams for all Generation Controls functions including but not limited to Independent System Operator (ISO) and local utility grid requirements, grid compliance/Top Level control systems, substation SCADA integration, BESS generation control systems, PV generation control systems, Wind Turbine generation control systems, and any hybrid control systems required for projects with multiple generation assets. This position understands and clearly communicates the control requirements of ISOs, how they are associated with the Interconnection Agreements (IAs)/Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) of each project and explicitly highlight control requirements that need to be verified in SCADA Integrator’s solutions. This position interfaces heavily with the Development and Construction teams, as well as Clients and Subcontractors.

Requirements:
  • Serves as SME to provide Generation Controls expertise on wind, energy storage, and solar power systems.
  • Oversees Generation Control system designs that include control narratives, HMI functionality, equipment BOMs, point lists, rack/enclosure elevations, power distribution diagrams, critical spares lists, software specifications, FAT procedures, construction work instructions, commissioning work instructions, SAT procedures, etc. to ensure technical requirements are met.
  • Provides technical oversight of Generation Control consultants and subcontractors which includes leading IC&S meetings, tracking deliverables, facilitating/coordinating testing activities, reviewing and approving bill of materials, advising on budgets, and ensuring system completion.
  • Develops quality assurance specifications that ensure a quality system is installed and tested to RES’s Generation Controls quality assurance specifications, and oversees quality assurance of Generation Controls systems during all phases of projects.
  • Ensures Generation Controls system installation, configuration, integration, and inspections that confirm the Generation Controls system has been installed per RES requirements and tested to meet RES, client, QSE, Utility, NERC, and regional reliability council requirements.
  • Executes quality assurance plan for Generation Control functions that ensure system safety, design reviews, factory acceptance tests (FAT), commissioning, site acceptance tests (SAT), and turnover plans are executed responsibly, reliably, and efficiently.
  • Communicates and coordinates with RES internal teams, owners, subcontractors, site teams, and other key stakeholders to execute Generation Controls system activities and ensure project milestones are met.
  • Creates deployment strategies for Generation Controls solutions according to timelines and budget.
  • Maintains project and department documentation in RES documentation control software.
  • Attends work regularly and punctually, as scheduled, or expected.
  • Complies with Employee Handbook, Code of Conduct, and Company Policies & Procedures.
  • Presents, supports, and leads-by-example with a safety and quality-oriented attitude.
  • Provides strategic advice and optimized business processes related to Generation Controls systems to project execution teams and their supporting departments.
  • Works with Engineering, Procurement, and Construction to identify and resolve Generation Controls problems or issues related to design information, schedule, material deliveries, change management, safety, and quality.
  • Manages the business process associated with Generation Controls QAQC.
  • Provides Generation Controls technical guidance and support to other Engineers, Project Execution teams, and other project stakeholders.
  • Supports review and analysis of data and technical report preparation.
  • Oversees, from a technical perspective, efforts to maintain Generation Controls project and department documentation.
  • Works with the Engineering Delivery and Project Execution teams to provide progress and schedule updates related to Generation Controls activities.
  • Ensures all Generation Controls quality assurance documentation for commissioning and testing activities are completed and turned over to the Project Execution team to be incorporated into the client job books.
  • Supports Generation Controls Warranty requests for completed projects.
  • Interfaces with the Project Engineers, Project Execution teams, Owners, Subcontractors, and other key stakeholders to plan and schedule O&M training.
  • Troubleshoots problems until site requirements are met.
  • Stays current with professional and industrial best practices, providing insights to IC&S/SCADA/Generation Controls teams and Engineering leadership.
  • Ensures completion of other ad hoc job-related duties/functions and projects to support the IC&S Engineering teams.
Safety:
  • Follows safety and security procedures and determines appropriate action. Reports potentially unsafe conditions and uses materials and equipment properly.
Qualifications:
  • Associate’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Equivalent and at least 2 years additional experience or at least 4 years additional experience in a similar position with relevant experience is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent is preferred.
  • 4+ years of IC&S equivalent experience is required.
  • Domestic and International travel 5-15%.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of utility scale electric power industry, including how renewable power plants work, the typical controls architecture, industry fundamentals, and leading functional practices.
  • Proven experience with power Generation Controls, data acquisitions, and telecommunications.
  • Field experience with Generation Controls power system testing, commissioning, and communications networking.
  • Experience with working collaboratively and professionally with clients, vendors, employees, directors, and supervisors.
  • Ability to critically evaluate designs from an economic and technical standpoint.
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Intermediate Excel including charts, graphs, bars, pivot tables, XLOOKUP, COUNTIF, SUMIF, filtering information to provide quality data, creating macros to automate common tasks, and managing large amounts of data.
  • Advanced understanding of:
  • Top Level/Master PPC, EMS, Generation Controls, DCS, Battery Management Systems (BMS), Power Conversion System (PCS) skids/packages, Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), and other Generation Controls concepts, hardware, and software.

Anticipated base salary range:

$111,000- $139,000

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. This position is bonus eligible.
