Job summary

Garrett Motion, a leader in advanced turbocharging and electric boosting technologies, seeks a Development Engineer in Torrance, CA. You will help design, industrialize, and launch centrifugal compressors into production, interfacing with customers and cross-functional teams.

Ideal candidates have turbomachinery, industrial compressors, or electric motors experience. Travel 10–20% to supplier sites and customers, with responsibility for end-to-end development and production readiness.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Mechanical/Automotive/Industrial Engineering or related field.
  • At least 3–5 years of experience launching products into production.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications for internal and external stakeholders.
  • 10–20% travel to manufacturing or customer sites.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure robust product implementation in the customer package through direct customer engagement.
  • Coordinate design (2D/3D), simulation (CFD/FEA), manufacturing, and suppliers to create production-ready components.
  • Define FMEA and execute DVP&R with prototypes and testing.
  • Support development of process documents (manufacturing, lab, design).
  • Drive field or launch issue resolutions using root cause analysis (8D, 5WHY, Ishikawa).
  • Generate VE ideas for cost reduction in design, materials, and processes.
  • Monitor budget and resources via the AOP process.
  • Initiate benchmarking related to component and discipline.
  • Report major gaps in tools, knowledge, and product targets to meet future goals.

We develop advanced turbochargers and electric boosting technologies for hybrids and electrified powertrains. Garrett continues to advance turbo applications while leveraging its unique technology portfolio, including fuel cell compressors for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, electric propulsion and thermal management systems for automotive and industrial applications. Our products enable improved fuel economy and energy efficiency, enhanced thermal management, reduced weight and size, and lower greenhouse gas and other emissions.


We serve original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and independent aftermarket distributors worldwide across the mobility and industrial fields. Our solutions support light and commercial vehicles (on- and off-highway), as well as marine and industrial applications, including heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and power generation.


The Garrett Advancing Motion (GTX) Compression Product Group develops new products for the automotive and industrial markets that will have lasting impacts on our planet. We are expanding our team at our Torrance, CA facility in support of developing and launching industrial centrifugal compressors into production. A Development Engineer is needed to assist in the design and industrialization of this product. Work includes end to end design to production, including direct communication with the customer and cross-functional internal teams. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a growing technology at a well-established company.


The successful candidate will have experience launching new products into production and be comfortable in a fast-paced environment. This person will bring experience in turbomachinery, industrial compressors, and/or electric motors that wants to help expand Garrett's centrifugal technology into the industrial market.


Responsibilities


  • Ensure robust product implementation in the customer package through direct customer engagement

  • Coordinate activities with design (2D/3D), simulation (CFD, FEA, etc.), manufacturing, and suppliers to create production viable components

  • Define FMEA and execute DVP&R by preparing prototype hardware, testing, analysis, and summary

  • Support development of process documents (manufacturing, lab, design, etc.) as needed to ensure lessons learned are captured

  • Drive field or launch issue resolution process using root cause analysis tools, document it by appropriate way (8D, 5WHY, Ishikawa, Knowledge Card, etc …..)

  • Generate VE ideas contributing to cost reduction of the product in terms of design, materials and processes

  • Persist on compliance with budget and resources allocated via AOP process

  • Initiate and execute benchmarking activity related to his component & discipline

  • Reports back through the GBE and the Domains any major gaps in simulation tools, knowledge gaps and product gaps to meet new performance, reliability and cost targets for future development


Position Requirements


  • Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or other related engineering discipline

  • At least 3-5 years of experience with developing and/or launching products into production

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills for internal and external communication

  • 10-20% travel to manufacturing and/or customer sites

  • Team player, Growth and customer focus


Preferred Experience or Capabilities


  • Experience with centrifugal compressor systems

  • Experience with safety certification (UL, CE, etc.)

  • Experience in turbomachinery, mechanical design or testing

  • Experience in high speed electric motors and hydrodynamic bearings

  • Experience with casting, machining, and assembly of hardware

  • Experience with 3D design tools

  • Six Sigma GB certification

  • Eager to learn and acquire new skills, new capabilities


Pay Range

The salary range for this role is between $105,400 and $131,800.


*Note that this range represents the pay range for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. Starting rate of pay may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, position offered, education, training, and/or experience.
