Job summary

Bilfinger Inc. seeks an Instrument Tech to support refinery instrumentation maintenance. Must troubleshoot and repair instrumentation, read schematics, P&ID drawings, and ladder logic, and work with low voltage systems.

Will install tubing and assist the instrument technician in daily duties. Candidates should have 5+ years in instrumentation/electrical maintenance, state-of-the-art safety training, and the ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED plus apprenticeship or 2-year instrumentation education.
  • Familiarity with National Electrical Code.
  • 4+ years of electrical experience.
  • Ability to work at heights (>6 ft).
  • Knowledge of safety standards and PPE usage.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret instrumentation schematics, wiring diagrams, and P&ID drawings.
  • Install tubing and assist instrument technician in daily duties.
  • Operate and troubleshoot low voltage systems (115/240V).
  • Calibrate instruments and maintain calibration records.
  • Ensure refinery safety procedures are followed.
  • Communicate with I&E supervisors regarding status and responsibilities.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Safety is a priority; employee must understand construction risks and bring them to the attention of their supervisor.
  • Proper selection, inspection, use and maintenance of common electrical test equipment.
  • Ability to read electrical blueprints, including schematics, one-lines and wiring diagrams.
  • Understands the purpose, use, and application of all circuit breakers, fuses, contractors, and relays.
  • Able to calculate and install potential transformers, current transformers, constant current transformers, and shielded transformers.
  • Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
Requirements
  • High school diploma/GED and completion of a craft apprenticeship, equivalent number of years of education and production maintenance experience or an Associate degree in mechanical, electrical or industrial maintenance.
  • Familiarity with National Electrical Code.
  • 4+ years of electrical experience.
  • Ability to work at heights greater than six feet off the ground.
  • Knowledge of relative safety standards and willingness to use protective clothing (face shield, gloves, etc.).
Job Summary (Instrument Tech)
  • Must be familiar with instrumentation troubleshooting and repair techniques.
  • Should be able to install tubing and assist the instrument technician in normal duties.
  • Knowledge of interpreting schematics, wiring diagrams, ladder logic, flow diagrams, P&ID’s and construction blueprints is required.
  • Will be working with low voltage 115/240 volts.
  • Must be qualified to operate a man‑lift, scissor lift, forklift and respirator fitted.
  • Must be able to work in high places (not afraid of heights) and in confined spaces.
  • Must be physically fit and should have the aptitude to advance to a senior instrumentation technician.
  • Ensures that refinery safety procedures are followed.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • High school education or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in instrumentation and electronic maintenance with at least 1 year in refinery/petrochemical plants or satisfactory completion of two years of instrumentation disciplines.
  • Must be computer literate for using plant programs (condition monitoring, condition reporting, and status reporting).
  • Have effective communication and team working skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Must know calibration.
  • Must be reliable—daily attendance for scheduled work is mandatory.
  • Must be capable of identifying, utilizing and operating tools and equipment associated with applied craft discipline.
  • Operate mobile motorized vehicles and motorized equipment, as trained.
  • Must demonstrate ability to comprehend and recognize all job‑related work permits and complete Job Hazard Analysis.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to troubleshoot and solve problems.
  • Must be able to follow and comprehend supervisor’s instructions.
  • Must have the ability to perform basic math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Must be fluent at reading, speaking, and writing English.
  • Must be able to maintain communications with I&E supervisors of job status and current assigned responsibilities.
  • Must be able to maintain a clean jobsite free of tripping hazards and unnecessary obstacles.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of entry requirements for columns, vessels and heaters.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Must be capable of working in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Must be capable of working outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  • Must be able to bend, squat and kneel.
  • Must be capable of climbing ladders and scaffolds and working at heights.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 60 pounds unassisted.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to perform work wearing personnel protective equipment, including rain gear, chemical protective clothing, supplied‑air and air‑purifying respirators, safety harness, sand‑blast hoods, Nomex coveralls, hard hat, ear plugs and safety glasses.
  • Background checks, drug tests, and pulmonary function test will be required.
