Job summary

PBF Energy in Paulsboro, NJ is seeking an I&E Technician to maintain instrumentation, electrical, and control systems across refinery and terminal areas. Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with operations and maintenance for scheduled work and startups.
  • Respond to alarms, upsets, and emergencies; document findings and actions.
  • Maintain records: work orders, calibration reports, and spare parts logs.

Job description

I&E Technician

The I&E Technician is a critical hands‑on role responsible for the safe, efficient, reliable, and compliant maintenance of instrumentation, electrical, automation, and light mechanical systems in PBF's CPI Operations facility in Paulsboro, NJ. This position serves as the primary technician for all I&E‑related tasks across the facility, including production units (asphalt and crude processing), truck loading racks, storage terminal, and associated pipelines. The technician will perform installations, calibrations, troubleshooting, and repairs to ensure operational integrity, minimize downtime, and support operational excellence.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Install, maintain, calibrate, and repair field instrumentation including pressure, temperature, level, and flow transmitters, control valves, analyzers, and related devices.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on electrical systems, including power distribution, motor control centers (MCCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), motors, lighting, and control circuits.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and instrumentation issues using diagnostic equipment such as multimeters, pressure calibrators, smart communicators, and meggers.
  • Maintain and support Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS), including I/O checks, fault isolation, and basic programming modifications.
  • Perform light mechanical tasks, including maintenance and troubleshooting of pumps, motors, gearboxes, compressors, valves, and rotating equipment.
  • Interpret and work from P&IDs, loop diagrams, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and instrument data sheets.
  • Operate plant vehicles, hand tools, power lift equipment, man‑lifts, and other machinery as needed for I&E tasks in both terminal and refinery unit areas.
  • Support commissioning, startups, and modifications of control and electrical systems.
  • Conduct routine inspections, testing, and calibration to ensure compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements (Federal and State Regulators).
  • Respond promptly to operational alarms, upsets, abnormal conditions, and emergencies involving I&E equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records, including work orders, calibration reports, maintenance logs, and spare parts inventory.
  • Participate in root cause analysis, emergency response drills, safety meetings, job safety analyses (JSAs), and incident investigations.
  • Identify opportunities for improvements in safety, reliability, efficiency, automation, and cost reduction.
  • Complete and maintain required qualifications, including HAZWOPER, TWIC, and other company‑mandated training.
  • Coordinate with operations, maintenance teams, contractors, and control center personnel for scheduled maintenance, repairs, and project support.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support overall operations.
Optional Responsibilities
  • Cross‑qualify as a terminal operator to safely assist with Polymer Modified Asphalt (PMA) production.
  • Act as Person‑in‑Charge (PIC) at the dock and load/unload railcars.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree or technical/vocational training in electrical technology, instrumentation, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of hands‑on experience in instrumentation and electrical maintenance within petroleum terminals, refineries, pipelines, or heavy industrial environments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of I&E systems, including analyzers, transmitters, PLCs, DCS, vibration monitoring, and process analyzers.
  • Strong working knowledge of industrial electrical systems, control circuits, MCCs, and rotating equipment (pumps, motors).
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical/instrumentation diagrams, P&IDs, loop diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Proven troubleshooting, diagnostic, and problem‑solving skills across multi‑discipline systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and SAP; experience with SCADA or terminal automation software is highly desirable.
  • Experience with tools and diagnostic equipment for troubleshooting, repairing, replacing, and testing instrument loops, electrical circuits, and equipment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including after‑hours callouts, weekends, and overtime to respond to emergencies.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and teamwork skills with a strong emphasis on safety culture.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license and be eligible to obtain and maintain a TWIC card, meeting all company standards for safety‑sensitive positions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with transitioning operations or legacy refinery systems, like asphalt and crude units.
  • Knowledge of advanced systems including cathodic protection, flow computers, data analytics, or advanced SCADA systems.
  • Familiarity with alarm management, process optimization, or vibration analysis in midstream/refinery settings.
  • Current certifications in electrical safety, instrumentation (e.g., ISA CCST), or related I&E qualifications.
  • Demonstrated adaptability to evolving technologies and expanded operational responsibilities in converted refinery‑terminal environments.
Pay & Benefits

The pay rate is $50.40 per hour, determined by a Collective Bargaining Agreement. In addition to pay, PBF offers a comprehensive benefits package which includes bonus eligibility, health care, retirement benefits, and paid time off.
