Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Technician

Department: Electrical & Controls | Location: Goodyear, AZ (On‑Site) | Role Type: Full‑Time Contract

On‑Site. No per diem — local candidates only. $25–$31/hr

About Our Client

Our client is a well‑established construction and critical facilities contractor with decades of experience delivering large‑scale infrastructure projects across the United States. Specializing in mission‑critical environments, the company provides end‑to‑end construction, commissioning, and systems integration services to enterprise and hyperscale data center operators. With a strong presence in the Southwest and a growing portfolio of projects in the greater Phoenix metro area, they serve some of the most recognized names in cloud computing and colocation. The organization is guided by a culture of precision, safety, and accountability — values reflected in both their project outcomes and their approach to workforce development.

Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Technician to join a fast‑paced data center construction project located in Goodyear, AZ. This is a local, on‑site position with no per diem — ideal for candidates already based in the greater Phoenix area. In this role, you will be responsible for the installation, calibration, and testing of instrumentation and control systems critical to the reliable operation of a state‑of‑the‑art data center facility.

Day‑to‑day, you will work alongside electrical, mechanical, and commissioning teams to ensure all I&C systems — including BAS/BMS interfaces, sensors, transmitters, and control panels — are installed to specification and fully operational prior to turnover. Your work will directly impact the safety, efficiency, and performance of critical infrastructure that supports large‑scale computing operations.

The ideal candidate is detail‑oriented, comfortable reading and interpreting control drawings and loop diagrams, and has hands‑on experience in a mission‑critical or heavy industrial environment. You’ll report to the lead I&C supervisor on‑site and collaborate closely with subcontractors, commissioning agents, and the general contractor’s project management team.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Install, terminate, and label instrumentation wiring including signal cables, conduit runs, and junction boxes per project drawings and specifications.
  • Calibrate and verify accuracy of field instruments including pressure transmitters, temperature sensors, flow meters, and level sensors.
  • Assist in the installation and startup of Building Automation System (BAS) and Building Management System (BMS) components.
  • Perform loop checks, functional testing, and pre‑commissioning activities on control systems prior to energization.
  • Read and interpret P&IDs, control schematics, loop diagrams, and vendor documentation to ensure accurate installation.
  • Identify and document field discrepancies, RFIs, and punch list items in coordination with the project engineering team.
  • Coordinate daily work activities with the general contractor, mechanical trades, and commissioning teams to meet project milestones.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and code‑compliant work area in accordance with site safety protocols and OSHA regulations.
  • Complete all required documentation including as‑built markups, calibration records, and test reports.
  • Support the commissioning and startup team during integrated systems testing and final acceptance phases.
Required Experience & Skills
  • Minimum 3–5 years of hands‑on experience as an I&C Technician in construction, industrial, or mission‑critical environments.
  • Proficiency in the installation and termination of instrumentation and control wiring (4‑20mA, discrete I/O, network cabling).
  • Experience with BAS/BMS systems including installation of sensors, controllers, and actuators.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents including loop diagrams, P&IDs, and control panel schematics.
  • Solid understanding of NEC code requirements related to instrumentation and low‑voltage wiring.
  • Hands‑on experience with instrument calibration tools and procedures.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose wiring faults, signal issues, and equipment malfunctions.
  • Familiarity with data center mechanical and electrical systems including CRAC/CRAH units, generators, and UPS systems.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills for working in a multi‑trade construction environment.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start).
  • Must be local to the Phoenix/Goodyear, AZ area — no relocation or per diem provided.
Nice‑to‑Haves
  • Experience on hyperscale or enterprise data center construction projects.
  • Familiarity with Schneider Electric, Siemens, or Johnson Controls BAS/BMS platforms.
  • NICET certification in Industrial Instrumentation or a related discipline.
