Job description

Responsible for the safe operations of the hyperbaric chamber systems across the Wake market. Develops ongoing training and ensures staff and facilities meet standards set by various licensing and regulatory agencies. Performs routine chamber and building

inspections, coordinates and approves all hyperbaric chamber upgrades, modifications and repairs and performs quality reviews of safety logs and safety incidents. Responsible for maintaining accreditation and annual competencies in collaboration with the department leaders.

Major Responsibilities

  • Performs duties of Safety Director/Coordinator for the multiplace/monoplace chambers. Provides direction and follows policy and procedures to meet the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA),
  • Safe Standard for Pressure Vessels for Human Occupancy (PVHO), and other regulatory agencies related to hyperbaric
  • facilities.
  • Coordinates and oversees system emergency procedure training and annual Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
  • competency assessments.
  • Oversees hyperbaric Preventative Maintenance Program for chambers and coordinates vendor maintenance visits.
  • Provides staff education, procedures and medical staff communication related to hyperbaric program. Orients and maintains competencies for staff in their hyperbaric chamber responsibilities related to attending, chamber operation, safety guidelines and new employee orientation.
  • Responsible for the safe and effective operation, control, and maintenance of the hyperbaric chamber systems across the
  • system and their supporting components.
  • Coordinates, monitors and evaluates plans designed to identify, evaluate, and alleviate risks in the Hyperbaric and Wound Care department that may adversely affect the life and/or health of patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Monitors safety initiatives and develops quality improvement strategies and best practices for the system.
  • Develops and coordinates Hyperbaric Safety training programs and protocols for employees in the areas of awareness
  • (preparedness), mitigation, response and recovery.
  • Collaborates with site leadership/staff to develop site emergency readiness plans to include training, equipment needs, communication needs, facility needs and other issues as identified.
  • Reviews, develops and implements safety and emergency preparedness policies for hyperbaric department procedures while following regulation standards in collaboration with leadership. Revises operational maintenance manuals annually.
  • Reviews all safety incidents with System Medical Director.
  • Collects information regarding equipment/patient safety, reports relevant incidents to the staff, and looks for trends in reported incidents. Monitors newly implemented safety improvement protocols to ensure compliance. Provides in-service training on accident prevention as needed.
  • Protection Association), Health Care Facilities, Chapter 20, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), and other city, state and federal regulations as they relate to evacuation drills and emergency preparedness.
  • Works with management in following up and correcting identified concerns and compliance issues.
  • Conducts UHMS Accreditation pre-surveys with System Medical Director to ensure compliance and continued accreditation status. Ensures all technical personnel meet standards set by various licensing and regulatory agencies
  • Fosters a positive relationship between the hyperbaric sites, and the local Fire Marshalls, Emergency Medical Services
  • Directors, and the Pressure Vessel Inspectors.
  • Collaborates with governmental and state regulatory agencies and/or external representatives having jurisdiction on safety related inspections by accompanying them on tours and actively participates in any required corrective action.
  • Works closely with Clinical Engineering and Site Facility Operations to coordinate and approve all hyperbaric chamber
  • upgrades, modification, and repairs to the hyperbaric system, including ensuring that all maintenance activities are done in accordance with appropriate safety standards.
  • Ensures that the testing of all modification is performed before manned pressurization.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Health Science or related field.

Certification / Registration / License

Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT) or CHT Admin certification issued by the National Board of Diving & Hyperbaric Medical

Technology (NBDHMT) or Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurse Clinician (CHRNC) certification issued by the Baromedical Nurses Association Certification Board

Work Experience

5 years of experience in a hyperbaric technician or related position

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Completion of an Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) approved introductory course in Hyperbaric Medicine.
  • Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) regulations and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) guidelines.
  • Familiarity with fire safety and patient safety related to decompression and exposure to gases.
  • Working knowledge of hyperbaric safety codes and decompression procedures.
  • Previous program planning experience including development of procedures, protocols and training required.
  • Previous experience in startup of new hyperbaric programs desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in using computerized control system.
  • Proficient in operating multiplace chamber control panels, monoplace chamber control panels, and all patient care and monitoring equipment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to travel for quarterly site visits.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, and reach to complete preventative maintenance and emergency repairs to equipment.
  • Must be able to: lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist; lift up to 20 lbs over the head; carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to: push/pull with 30 lbs of force; perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs with a second person present.
  • Functional use of senses.
  • Potential for exposure to mechanical, electrical, explosive and chemical hazards as well as blood and body fluids and thus have ability to take precautions by wearing protective clothing (gloves, mask, etc) as necessary.
  • Exposure to compressed air environment with hazard related to barotraumas injury or decompression illness.
  • Must be able to work in an enclosed and warm environment with temperatures ranging from 50-120 degrees F.
  • Must operate all equipment necessary to perform the job.

PREFERRED JOB REQUIREMENTS

Certification / Registration / License

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required
