Job summary

St. Joseph Center in Los Angeles is recruiting a Hygiene Specialist to support the Skid Row Care Campus, handling front-line shower, restroom, and laundry services while ensuring cleanliness and safety across hygiene areas.

Qualifications

• Cleaning, sanitation, laundry, or hygiene-services experience is helpful but not required.
• Strong customer-service, teamwork, reliability, communication, and attention-to-detail skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist participants with safe and respectful access to shower, restroom, and laundry services.
• Clean, disinfect, reset, and restock hygiene areas and maintain orderly service flow throughout the shift.

Job description

Since 1976, St. Joseph Center has been meeting the needs of low-income and homeless individuals and families in Venice, Santa Monica, Mar Vista, and surrounding communities. The Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization that assists people without regard for religious affiliation or lack thereof through comprehensive case management and integrated social service programs. The Center enjoys broad-based community support as well as a sponsored relationship with its founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. St. Joseph Center serves approximately 6,000 individuals annually.

Brief Description of Principal Activities

Multifaceted intervention, prevention, and education services are carried out at four sites on the Westside of Los Angeles. St. Joseph Center’s integrated programs provide clients with concentrated and coordinated access to services according to the nature of their needs.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Skid Row Care Campus is a comprehensive, low-barrier service center providing individuals experiencing homelessness with access to hygiene facilities, case management, health and behavioral health services, and connections to housing and other essential resources. The Campus offers a safe, welcoming, and trauma-informed environment that promotes dignity, stability, and pathways to long-term housing.

The Hygiene Specialist provides frontline shower, restroom, and laundry services while supporting the cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and daily readiness of hygiene areas across the Care Campus.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Assist participants with safe and respectful access to shower, restroom, and laundry services.
• Clean, disinfect, reset, and restock hygiene areas and maintain orderly service flow throughout the shift.
• Monitor for safety, sanitation, equipment, and wellness concerns and promptly request assistance when needed.
• Operate laundry equipment, handle participant belongings carefully, and follow established cleaning, PPE, and infection-prevention procedures.

Qualifications

• Cleaning, sanitation, laundry, or hygiene-services experience is helpful but not required.
• Strong customer-service, teamwork, reliability, communication, and attention-to-detail skills.
• Ability to treat participants with dignity, remain calm during challenging interactions, and follow safety and sanitation procedures.
