Job summary

Actalent, based in Elm City, NC, seeks an experienced Hydronic / Dirty Utility Superintendent to lead field teams on complex industrial projects. You will direct hydronic and process piping activities, coordinate piping systems installation, and drive safety and quality across the project.

You will supervise foremen, pipefitters, welders, and subcontractors, develop look‑ahead plans, manage labor and materials, and ensure turnover meets project specifications and codes. Travel is required.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of industrial piping or mechanical construction experience.

Job Title: Hydronic / Dirty Utility Superintendent

Job Description

The Hydronic / Dirty Utility Superintendent directs and coordinates all hydronic and process piping field activities on complex industrial construction projects. This role leads field teams, ensures safe and high-quality installation of hydronic and utility systems, and works closely with project stakeholders to achieve schedule, cost, and performance goals. The superintendent actively manages labor, materials, and field coordination while driving a strong safety culture and maintaining strict compliance with project specifications, codes, and industry standards.

Responsibilities

• Direct and coordinate all hydronic and process piping field activities from mobilization through turnover.
• Supervise General Foremen, Foremen, pipefitters, welders, and subcontractors to ensure safe, efficient, high-quality work.
• Develop daily, weekly, and look-ahead work plans that support project milestones, production goals, and field priorities.
• Manage labor productivity, workforce planning, manpower forecasting, and resource allocation to maintain schedule commitments.
• Monitor installation progress and proactively resolve field challenges, constructability issues, constraints, and conflicts.
• Oversee installation of chilled water, heating hot water, condenser water, glycol, process water, steam and condensate, chemical, utility piping systems, and equipment piping connections.
• Verify proper installation and alignment of pumps, heat exchangers, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and related mechanical equipment.
• Coordinate hydrostatic testing, flushing, cleaning, balancing, startup, commissioning, and system turnover activities.
• Lead and promote a strong safety culture across all field operations.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and site-specific safety requirements.
• Conduct toolbox talks, safety meetings, pre-task planning sessions, hazard assessments, and support incident investigations and corrective actions.
• Ensure all installations comply with project specifications, applicable codes, industry standards, and client requirements.
• Review drawings, specifications, P&IDs, isometrics, shop drawings, and BIM coordination models to guide field execution.
• Coordinate inspections, pressure testing, weld documentation, and other quality assurance activities.
• Manage punch lists, track deficiencies, and ensure timely resolution while maintaining high standards of workmanship.
• Collaborate with Project Managers, Engineers, BIM/VDC teams, General Contractors, Owners, and other trades to align field execution and avoid conflicts.
• Participate in progress meetings, planning sessions, and schedule reviews, providing accurate field status updates.
• Assist with procurement planning and material management to ensure timely availability of piping, equipment, and supplies.
• Monitor critical path activities, identify schedule risks, and implement mitigation strategies to prevent delays.
• Coordinate manpower, material resources, and field activities to support critical work and maintain project progress.
• Provide regular updates on progress, productivity, and potential delays to project leadership and stakeholders.

Essential Skills

• 8+ years of industrial piping or mechanical construction experience.
• 3+ years of experience as a Superintendent, General Foreman, or Senior Foreman leading field crews.
• Extensive knowledge of hydronic and industrial piping systems, including chilled water, hot water, condenser water, glycol, process water, steam, condensate, and utility systems.
• Strong understanding of pipe fabrication, welding, testing, and commissioning processes.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, P&IDs, specifications, isometrics, shop drawings, and BIM models.
• Experience managing self-perform craft labor and subcontractors on industrial construction projects.
• Strong knowledge of industrial construction safety requirements and OSHA regulations.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to work safely on active industrial construction sites, including climbing ladders, working at heights, accessing confined spaces, standing and walking for extended periods, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Willingness to travel based on project assignments.

• UA pipefitter apprenticeship completion or equivalent trade background.
• OSHA 30 Certification.
• Experience with Procore, Bluebeam, Navisworks, BIM 360, or similar construction management and coordination platforms.
• Familiarity with commissioning and startup procedures for complex hydronic systems.
• Knowledge of hydronic and industrial piping standards and best practices.
• Interest in contributing to the growth and expansion of a large mechanical and electrical contractor with a long-standing history in the industry.

Work Environment

This role is based on active industrial construction sites and involves daily interaction with field crews, project teams, and multiple trades. The superintendent works in a dynamic, fast-paced environment that includes exposure to operational equipment, construction activities, and varying weather conditions. The position requires frequent walking, standing, climbing ladders, working at heights, accessing confined spaces when required, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Travel is required based on project assignments and may include work on pharmaceutical, life science, semiconductor, data center, manufacturing, power, energy, food and beverage, and cleanroom projects. The work environment emphasizes a strong safety culture, collaboration with mechanical, electrical, structural, and specialty trades, and the use of modern tools and technologies such as BIM/VDC platforms and digital construction management systems.

This is a Permanent position based out of Elm City, NC.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $120000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
