Job summary

American Municipal Power, Inc. in Smithland, KY is seeking a Plant Operator I to manage daily hydroelectric plant operations from the Smithland facility.

The role involves starting/stopping units, monitoring river flow, and coordinating with engineers and the Army Corps of Engineers to ensure reliable power delivery. Responsibilities include debris removal, alarm response, routine maintenance, and maintaining detailed logs.

Qualifications

• Two year technical degree or equivalent military experience.
• Experience in plant operations and/or maintenance preferred.
• Ability to read instruction manuals, blueprints, and schematics.

Responsibilities

• Operate and monitor hydroelectric units, start/stop, and adjust discharge rates; monitor river flow and equipment.
• Clean debris from intake racks to maximize head for the units.
• Acknowledge and respond to faults or alarms from the control switchboard and clear alarms.
• Assist in plant maintenance on pumps, motors, valves, instrumentation, and substations.
• Assist with operation of the oil purification system on a scheduled basis.
• Update daily logs, create and update work orders in Maximo, and track inventory.
• Suggest improvements to manuals, procedures, and safety practices; participate in safety briefings.
• Ensure compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements.
• Schedule and coordinate power delivery to the grid with minimal interruptions.
• Maintain daily logs of work performed and visitors; handle plant supplies delivery.
• Perform other assigned duties.

Education

Two year technical degree in Engineering Technology

Two years experience in plant operations and/or maintenance
