Job summary

Rolls-Royce in Walpole, MA is seeking a Hydrodynamics Specialist to join a small engineering team responsible for design, analysis, manufacture, and support of marine propulsion equipment for naval applications.

You will conduct hydrodynamic design and analysis of propellers, blades, waterjets, and related components, perform model-scale testing, evaluate structures, and coordinate with foundry, machining, and quality teams to validate geometry and resolve non-conformances.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of aero/hydro mechanics experience with degree options
• US citizen with ability to obtain DoD clearance (confidential)
• Hands-on experience with hydrodynamics design and testing methods

Responsibilities

• Design and analyze hydrodynamic components for naval propulsion
• Conduct model-scale testing and evaluate cavitation, open-water, and power performance
• Coordinate with foundry, machining, and quality to validate geometry and dispositions
• Perform structural evaluation of propeller blades, hubs, shafts, and related parts
• Support proposal development and deliver formal reports to customers
• Liaise with US Navy, shipyards, and universities to strengthen technical relationships

Job description

Hydrodynamics Specialist

Walpole, MA

As the Hydrodynamics Specialist for Rolls-Royce, you will become a key contributor to a small, but versatile team of engineers responsible for the design, analysis, manufacture, installation, and support of marine propulsion equipment for naval applications. You will be responsible for the hydrodynamic design, analysis, and model scale test/evaluation of propellers, propeller blades, waterjets, and other marine propulsion devices utilizing proven tools/techniques also used by USN to achieve high performance designs. You will also be responsible for the structural evaluation of the propeller blades, hubs, hub components, shafting, etc. that comprise the complete propulsion system. In this role, you will be the primary liaison between foundry, blade machining production, and quality/inspection to facilitate the production of hydrodynamic components, their geometric validation, and disposition of any non-conformances. You will also support proposal development for new designs, and support funded programs to conduct of critical calculations and analyses supporting formal reports and customer deliverables. You will be expected to develop and maintain a strong relationship with counterparts within the USN technical community as well as supporting shipyards, ship designers, and research universities.

Key Accountabilities

• Knowledge of computational fluid dynamics tools and techniques from inviscid potential flow codes, to RANS/LES
• Programming in Fortran, Basic, C, C++ or other procedural code language
• Familiarity with Marine Propeller Blade Geometry design parameters and Metrology methods used to inspect propeller blade geometry
• Model scale test evaluation of marine propellers for open water, powering, and cavitation performance, and the prediction of full scale performance
• Mechanical design/analysis, familiarity with reading/interpretation of detailed engineering drawings and tolerance specifications in accordance with ANSI Y14.5
• Ability to use 3D CAD tools and structural Finite Element Analysis tools
• May be required to travel up to 10% of your time

Basic Requirements

• Associate’s degree in Aerospace Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Ocean Engineering/ Naval Architecture, with specialty in aero or hydro mechanics/dynamics with 10+ years of experience OR;
• Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Ocean Engineering/ Naval Architecture, with specialty in aero or hydro mechanics/dynamics with 6+ years of experience OR;
• Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Ocean Engineering/ Naval Architecture, with specialty in aero or hydro mechanics/dynamics with 4+ years of experience.

Preferred Requirements

• Prior experience with MIT or UTAustin Potential Steady/Unsteady Analysis and Design Codes for propellers and waterjets
• Prior use of Simerics Pumplinx, Star CCM, or ANSYS CFX RANS CFD
• Prior use of /experience with PTC CREO Parametric & Simulation, for design and structural analysis
• Familiarity with production manufacturing processes including metal casting, n.c. machining, CMM and laser tracker inspection
• Familiarity with US Navy and commercial laboratories and facilities used for hydrodynamic/ hydroacoustic design and analysis.
