Job description

We are currently seeking a skilled professional to join a Grand Rapids industrial equipment firm in a direct hire capacity. This organization is committed to supporting its staff and maintaining a strong internal culture, offering you the chance to manage projects from initial teardown to final testing while making a tangible contribution to the team.

Company Profile

This business focuses on waste recycling and dock equipment, serving sectors such as food, automotive, and general commerce. Their specialized division is dedicated to the refurbishment of hydraulic motors, pumps, valves, and cylinders. They are a growing enterprise that prioritizes teamwork, high-quality output, and client satisfaction, and they are looking for a Hydraulic Technician who aligns with these values to join their collaborative and supportive environment.

Your Profile

You offer versatility. Your background includes exposure to various cylinder dimensions and styles, potentially including heavy machinery, rather than being limited to a single shop environment. While you do not need to have mastered every specific pump or cylinder model, your broad technical foundation allows you to adapt to diverse repair challenges as they arise.

You manage the entire lifecycle of a repair. Your responsibility extends beyond simple disassembly; you will diagnose failures, execute the rebuild, perform testing, and prepare the unit for return. Whenever possible, you proactively suggest enhancements, such as seal upgrades, to prevent future equipment issues.

You are reliable and focused. You maintain productivity despite potential interruptions, strive to meet established repair timelines, and exercise sound judgment independently. You are a quick learner who retains information well, takes initiative, and sets a positive example for others through your work ethic and ownership.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and troubleshoot hydraulic components to identify wear, corrosion, or leaks, ensuring the root cause of failure is determined.
  • Disassemble, sanitize, and utilize precision instruments to measure internal parts, rods, and barrels to decide on reuse or replacement.
  • Restore cylinders to original specifications by installing new seals, pistons, and wear rings, including necessary polishing and buffing.
  • Perform maintenance and repair tasks on various pumps and valves.
  • Conduct pressure testing on finished assemblies to ensure they meet operational standards and help guarantee high-quality results for the client.
  • Interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics to assist in the maintenance of systems containing integrated electrical components.
  • Propose and implement technical upgrades to improve equipment longevity and help minimize repeat failures.
  • Maintain high efficiency to ensure all repairs are completed within quoted timeframes.
  • Record detailed findings, parts usage, and test results, while keeping leadership informed of any significant concerns.
  • Execute occasional repairs on pneumatic cylinder systems.
  • Maintain a safe and orderly workspace while strictly adhering to protocols, such as releasing stored energy and depressurizing systems.
  • Assist with parts identification and inventory management as required.
Required Qualifications
  • Four to seven years of experience in hydraulic repair, with the ability to work autonomously.
  • Proven experience handling a diverse range of cylinder sizes and configurations.
  • Comprehensive hands‑on experience covering the full repair cycle, including diagnostics and final testing.
  • Proficiency in reading and understanding electrical and hydraulic schematics.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accumulator systems.
  • High level of skill using precision measurement tools.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to follow detailed technical specifications and work instructions.
  • Ability to safely operate various shop and testing equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a collaborative team member.
Preferred Skills
  • Practical experience working with accumulators.
  • Background in rebuilding cylinders for heavy‑duty equipment.
  • Prior experience with pump and valve repair.
  • Familiarity with pneumatic cylinders, though prior experience is not mandatory.
The Team

You will be joining a compact, supportive team with diverse experience levels, including a senior technician available for mentorship. The shop is already equipped with a skilled welder, so that specific skill is not required. Leadership fosters a culture of mutual respect and brotherhood, recognizing that employees have personal lives and encouraging everyone to be both a dedicated professional and a supportive team member.

Compensation and Schedule
  • Hourly rate between $24 and $32, commensurate with your experience.
