Job summary

SA Recycling is seeking a dependable Crane Operator to safely load, unload, and move scrap metal and materials around the yard. The role involves operating a material handler with grapple or magnet, and coordinating with drivers to position loads.

Outside work in varying weather, you will perform inspections, maintain equipment, and follow SA Recycling safety rules while supporting production goals and a safe yard environment.

Qualifications

• High School diploma, GED, or equivalent
• 1 year+ experience running a material handler in scrap/demolition preferred
• Ability to follow written or oral instructions
• Ability to learn new tasks as assigned
• Must pass medical physical/drug test and background check
• Ability to communicate effectively; use basic math as needed

Responsibilities

• Operate wheeled material handlers to load/unload scrap metal and debris
• Determine load weights and verify against lifting capacities
• Identify, grade, and sort inbound scrap and reject unacceptable items
• Direct truck drivers for loading/unloading
• Perform routine maintenance and inspections of assigned equipment
• Ensure safe operating area around machine at all times
• Follow SA Recycling safety and environmental rules and procedures
• Perform all other duties as assigned

Job description

SA Recycling, a world leader in the metals recycling and processing industry, is actively looking for a dependable and experienced individual to join our team as a Crane Operator. As a Crane Operator, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operations of material handler with a grapple or magnet attachment to load and unload containers and trailers; and to lift, sort, and move scrap metal and other materials around the recycling yard.

This position will work outside in varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities of an Equipment Operator

• Preform pre- and post- operations inspections of assigned equipment according to Company policy to ensure windows, lights, mirrors, review cameras, and safety features are clean and operable.
• Continuously check the condition of the equipment to ensure it is always operationally ready to minimize production downtime.
• Operate wheeled material handlers to load and unload scrap metal and debris in preparation for processing or shipping, or to feed material to the auto shredder.
• Determine load weights and verify against machine lifting capacities to prevent overloads and dangerous situations.
• Identify, grade, and sort inbound scrap and reject unacceptable items.
• Direct truck drivers into proper position for loading and unloading scrap metal or other materials.
• Aid in yard organization to help meet targeted production goals.
• Preform routine maintenance functions of assigned machine (fueling, lubricating, and cleaning).
• Perform daily equipment inspections and report any concerns, defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
• Ensure a safe operating area around machine at all times.
• Follow all applicable federal, state, local, & SA Recycling safety, health, & environmental rules, regulations, policies, & procedures.
• Work with other employees in the scrap metal yard to ensure a safe working environment.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications of Equipment Operator

• High School diploma, GED Certification, or equivalent work experience.
• 1 years’ experience running a material handler in the scrap metal or demolition industries preferred.
• Ability to carry out instructions provided in written or oral form.
• Ability to learn new tasks as assigned required.
• Must pass a medical physical/drug test and background check
• Ability to communicate with others effectively; understand direction (written or oral) and use basic math skills as the job demands.

Physical Requirements:

• Equipment & Tools: Cable/hydraulic crane, lifting tools, mechanics tools
• Physical Demand Level: Light to Moderate
• Work Capacity: Lifting and carrying 35 lb loads, head turning, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders and sitting for long periods.
• Sensory Demands: Hearing, vision, touch and smell
• Hand Movements: Repetitive motions, gripping
