Job summary

NOAA Research seeks an OAR Science Communications Specialist embedded with scientists and senior leaders to translate research into concise, engaging materials. The role focuses on talking points for briefings, coordinating nationwide events, and advising the OAR Communications Director on sensitive engagement opportunities.

The position is hybrid (2-3 days onsite) at NOAA GLERL HQ in Ann Arbor, MI, with a track record of translating technical information for non-expert and senior government

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional and/or academic experience in communications.
• Ability to translate scientific content for diverse audiences.
• Experience providing communications support for federal science agencies is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Serve as analyst and coordinator for communication actions with OAR leadership and subject matter experts.
• Provide exceptional written and oral communications for OAR products and materials in clear, accessible language.
• Explain and organize complex scientific information into communication products for leadership and workforce.
• Provide planning and coordination support for periodic meetings, all-hands, and site visits.
• Develop talking points and materials used by leadership for internal and external audiences.
• Provide training and resources to nationwide OAR communications staff on various topics.
• Establish and maintain communications between OAR staff to share NOAA-relevant information.
• Coordinate within OAR to showcase mission across platforms and events.
• Advise leadership on sensitive issues, engagement opportunities, and communication strategies.
• Document workflows and maintain organized files for communications work.
