Job summary

Humana Inc. seeks a Senior Software Engineer on Team Caliber to build and maintain a rules-driven NBA platform. You will implement the business rules engine in Java with Drools, expose services via Java/Spring REST APIs, and connect with Kafka for event-driven decisions.

The role emphasizes correctness, performance, and collaboration with Product and Compliance in a PHI-handling environment. Hybrid work with some in-office days is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or relevant field.
• 5+ years of software engineering experience with strong Java and Spring/Spring Boot.
• Experience building and maintaining backend services and REST APIs.
• Comfort designing and reasoning about complex conditional/business logic.
• Working knowledge of event-driven integration and Kafka patterns.
• Experience operating on cloud infrastructure (Azure or equivalent) with containers/Kubernetes and CI/CD.
• Strong testing discipline and attention to correctness.
• Clear communicator across engineering, product, and compliance.

Responsibilities

• Rules engine development — design, build, and maintain Java/Drools rules for eligibility, suppression, frequency, and consent.
• Backend services — develop Java/Spring REST APIs to expose the rules engine.
• Event integration — produce/consume Kafka events linking rules to signals and decisions.
• Correctness and testing — write thorough tests for rule logic and services.
• Performance — keep rule evaluation fast as ruleset grows.
• Quality — participate in code reviews and shipping production-ready code in PHI-handling environments.
• Collaboration — work with Product and Compliance to translate requirements into maintainable rules.
