Waymo in Mountain View, CA is seeking a PhD candidate for a hybrid onsite internship in the Human Behavior Analytics team. You will explore cognitive science and mechanistic interpretability, develop models of human driving behavior, and interpret internal mechanisms of these models in collaboration with AI/ML researchers.

This internship offers a path into industry research with access to Waymo’s data, tools, and to participate in academic partnerships while contributing to real-world safety

Qualifications

• Strong research background in cognitive science or neuroscience.
• Expertise in contemporary AI and machine learning.
• Strong documented computational skills (math and coding).
• This role is designed for current PhD candidates; must be actively enrolled in a PhD program.

Responsibilities

• Survey the state-of-the-art in digital neuroscience and cognitive science and mechanistic interpretability.
• Develop models to represent aspects of human driving behavior not covered by existing data-driven ML models.
• Explore and demonstrate ways to interpret and explain the internal mechanisms of these models.
