Description

The Department of Campus Recreation at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a (Hybrid) Coordinator for Fitness and Wellbeing.

About the Opportunity

The Program Coordinator for Fitness and Wellbeing works with the Campus Recreation Associate Director to fulfill the mission, values, and goals of the Campus Recreation program, supporting the Division of Student Life and West Virginia University. This individual has policy-making responsibility at the department level, overseeing fitness and wellbeing services such as group exercise, personal training, specialty fitness, and other fitness services, primarily conducted at the Student Recreation Center (SRC) and Downtown Fitness Center (DFC). The coordinator creates policies and systems in areas including administrative, financial, and personnel functions in conjunction with the Programming and Operations teams. Reporting to the Associate Director of Campus Recreation, this position is responsible for formulating policies, making purchasing decisions, monitoring daily operations, and planning the optimal use of personnel to deliver a comprehensive and engaging user experience.

Direct supervision includes Graduate Assistant staff, student staff, personal trainers, and group exercise instructors. The person will be responsible for expanding activity offerings in line with university needs and industry trends. Responsibilities also include reviewing fitness program policies annually, providing input on programmatic or operational activities impacting user satisfaction, and performing strategic visioning and student development initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Provide administrative oversight of operational, financial, and personnel functions for all fitness and wellbeing programs, ensuring consistency in policies, procedures, and user experiences.
  • Lead daily operations of fitness and wellbeing services, including group exercise, personal training, and specialty fitness.
  • Plan, direct, and coordinate activities of the fitness and wellbeing programs.
  • Develop, promote, and evaluate a comprehensive group exercise program, including recruiting, training, and supervising instructors.
  • Develop, promote, and evaluate a personal training program, including recruiting, training, and supervising trainers.
  • Serve as a personal trainer and/or teach group exercise classes as needed.
  • Organize and promote special event programs and services related to fitness and wellbeing.
  • Collaborate with university units and develop new programs and services.
  • Instruct courses for group exercise instructors and personal trainers.
  • Work with the Program Coordinator for Informal Recreation and Associate Director on policies affecting fitness areas.
  • Ensure quality delivery of fitness services and research programming needs.
  • Assist in purchasing fitness equipment.
  • Support campus-wide initiatives, including wellness fairs and speaking engagements.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and mentor Graduate Assistants and staff.
  • Meet revenue targets and facilitate instructor meetings.
  • Coordinate with non-student wellbeing programs.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field; Master's preferred.
  • Required: Minimum of two (2) years of experience in collegiate recreation or similar; Graduate Assistant experience may suffice.
  • Preferred: At least three (3) years full-time experience in a college recreation environment, emphasizing student development.
  • Passion for student development and staff mentoring.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups and employ flexible management techniques.
  • Skills in program creation, budgeting, and fiscal accountability.
  • Strong leadership, supervisory, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
Requirements

Licenses / Certifications:

  • National certification in Personal Training (e.g., ACE, ACSM, AFFA) or Group Exercise Instructor required; holding both is preferred.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certifications required; instructor training preferred (must obtain within 6 months of hire).
