Job summary

Commonwealth of Massachusetts seeks an Associate General Counsel for the Massachusetts State Retirement Board (MSRB) to provide legal counsel on retirement benefits, disability retirement, and related regulatory matters.

The role requires a J.D., MA bar admission, and at least three years’ experience in public or private practice, with strong advocacy, research, and open-meetings knowledge. Hybrid work is available and the team collaborates with AG’s office.

Qualifications

  • Education: J.D. from accredited law school.
  • License/certification: Massachusetts bar certification and good standing with the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers.
  • Experience: At least three years’ experience in law firm and/or governmental agency.
  • Familiarity with trusts and estate law, family law, personal injury, medical malpractice, and/or insurance defense will be useful.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the MSRB in judicial and administrative forums on a variety of legal matters.
  • Advise Executive Director and staff regarding interpretation and implementation of G.L. c. 32 and related regulations.
  • Develop expertise regarding G.L. c. 32 and administrative regulations; stay current with related case law.
  • Participate in monthly MSRB Board meetings and present matters related to disability retirement, group classifications, beneficiary determinations, and forfeiture matters.
  • Review proposed worker’s compensation lump sum agreements and related orders that may affect retirement benefits.
  • Engage in enforcement and adjudicatory efforts for post-retirement earnings limits and related matters.
  • Monitor and analyze judicial decisions affecting the MSRB and provide timely guidance to staff.
