Modus21, LLC. is seeking an API Engineer (Mid-level) to join a hybrid team at Scott Air Force Base, IL or remote. You will design and optimize secure API platforms, implement authentication and monitoring, and integrate APIs with backend systems for mission-critical DoD programs.

The role requires 3+ years in backend engineering and 2+ years with API platforms (Apigee, Kong, etc.). Candidates must be US citizens and able to obtain a DoD SECRET clearance; experience with DevOps and cloud is

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or GED required.
• 3+ years backend or platform engineering, incl. distributed systems.
• 3+ years of Java or Python experience; 2+ years with real-time API platforms (Apigee, Kong, etc.).
• 1+ years of DevOps with Docker, Kubernetes, GitOps.
• Experience with HTTP, gRPC, WebSockets; API security.
• Experience with AWS/Azure/GCP.
• Experience with SQL, middleware or data integration, Spring stack.
• CompTIA Security+ or higher DoD 8570 cybersecurity cert.
• Familiarity with agile/scrum methodologies.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
• US citizen and ability to obtain DoD SECRET clearance.

Responsabilités

• Design, deploy, and optimize robust API platforms for data exchange and integrations.
• Write secure server-side logic and integrate APIs with back-end systems.
• Implement OAuth, JWT, rate limiting, and monitoring to prevent bottlenecks.
• Build programmatic API validation, integration, and resiliency tests; integrate with CI/CD.
• Maintain detailed API documentation for developers.
• Explain technical considerations in meetings with internal clients.
