Job summary

Southern Company is seeking an AI Engineer, or Application Analyst to design, build and evolve AI solutions within a regulated, enterprise environment in Birmingham, AL. The role emphasizes production-ready agents, models and workflows aligned to enterprise standards.

The candidate should have hands-on experience with Python, LLMs, Databricks, and retrieval-augmented patterns, plus a product-focused mindset and strong communication with stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Experience building AI and ML applications in enterprise settings.
• Understanding of agentic AI concepts including planners and tool-calling.
• Familiarity with enterprise data platforms and APIs across data types.
• Awareness of AI governance, risk and compliance in regulated environments.

Responsibilities

• Develop AI solutions and configure agents that reason, plan and act using models and tools.
• Translate requirements into end-to-end AI workflows including ingestion and inference.
• Embed safety controls, validation steps, and explainability into agent logic.
• Collaborate with architects and ML Ops for deployment, monitoring and iteration.
• Tune prompts and models to improve accuracy, latency, and cost efficiency.
• Prototype new capabilities and scale to enterprise-grade deployments.
• Refine agent performance using feedback and operational signals.
