Job Description: Hy-Chi Department Manager

FLSA: Non-Exempt

General Function:

The Hy-Chi Department Manager is responsible for setting standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, professional appearance, and overall profitability. The role involves coordinating the delivery of fresh, high-quality products at competitive prices and ensuring a positive company image through courteous, friendly, and efficient service to customers and team members.

Reporting Relations:
  • Reports to: District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, and Health Wellness Home, Food Service Director
  • Reports: Hy-Chi Department Employees
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Maintain a positive attitude; foster friendliness and teamwork.
  2. Create a welcoming atmosphere; encourage employees to greet and assist customers promptly and courteously.
  3. Set standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, and profitability.
  4. Greet customers warmly and make efforts to learn and use their names.
  5. Assist customers in finding products, handling special requests, and enhancing their shopping experience.
  6. Answer phones promptly and assist callers effectively.
  7. Recruit, hire, train, supervise, discipline, and evaluate department staff.
  8. Set department goals in coordination with the store director.
  9. Plan weekly work schedules and daily activities.
  10. Inspect signage and displays; order products for replenishment.
  11. Communicate sales and ideas with staff; handle customer issues.
  12. Determine retail pricing and ensure accuracy.
  13. Manage invoices and department bookkeeping.
  14. Analyze sales data, trends, and prepare promotional ads.
  15. Conduct inventory counts.
  16. Plan displays and promotions, and manage pre-orders.
  17. Maintain proper storage conditions to ensure freshness and minimize shrinkage.
  18. Troubleshoot equipment and oversee maintenance.
  19. Adhere to personal hygiene and dress standards.
  20. Follow company policies and store guidelines.
  21. Report to work as scheduled and work the expected hours.
Secondary Duties:
  • Ensure competitive pricing.
  • Attend meetings and participate in ongoing education.
  • Unload trucks, restock, and replenish merchandise.
  • Set up displays and perform other departmental duties as needed.
  • Assist in other store areas as required.
  • Perform additional tasks and projects as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Assign, review, and plan work for staff.
  • Maintain standards, coordinate activities, and handle employee issues.
  • Authorize employee discipline, transfers, discharges, and salary adjustments.
Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent, with over one year of related experience.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Problem-solving and interpretation of instructions.
  • Arithmetic skills involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Ability to compose correspondence, interpret instructions, interview candidates, and follow manuals.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to exert force up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.
  • Vision from close to far, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.
  • Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
Working Conditions:

Exposure to temperature extremes, dampness, equipment hazards, electrical shocks, and chemicals in a fast-paced environment.

Equipment Used:

Telephone, fax, copier, intercom, kitchen utensils, wrapping machine, pallet jacks, garbage disposal, trash and cardboard compactors, box cutter, computer, calculator.

Financial Responsibility:

Responsible for company assets, including equipment and merchandise.

Contacts:

Daily contact with customers, employees, vendors, and the public; occasional contact with regulatory agencies.

Confidentiality:

Access to sensitive information such as employee pay, sales reports, inventory data, and pricing.
