Job Description

Job Title: Hy-Chi Department Cook

Department: Hy-Chi

FLSA: Non-Exempt

General Function

As an Hy-Chi Department Cook, your responsibility is to prepare various foods for the Hy-Chi department, including hot and cold cases. You will ensure a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service to customers and team members.

Reporting Relations

Reports to: District Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, Health Wellness Home; Food Service Director; Hy-Chi Department Manager; Assistant Hy-Chi Department Manager; Service Managers

Positions reporting to you: None

Primary Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service, exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all interactions.
  • Greet customers with a smile, whether in your department or elsewhere in the store.
  • Learn and address customers by name whenever possible.
  • Assist customers by guiding them to products, securing out-of-reach items, loading heavy items, and passing along suggestions or requests.
  • Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service.
  • Work with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
  • Prepare wok dishes: clean with water, heat to appropriate temperature, add oil for cooking.
  • Cook soups first, then meats.
  • Prepare vegetables and sauces, adding spices as needed.
  • Combine ingredients with meat.
  • Place food in hot cases, monitor, and refill as necessary.
  • Order supplies when needed or notify department head.
  • Clean work area at end of shift.
  • Fill cold case with fresh-made food.
  • Prepare items for the next day, such as meats in freezer.
  • Understand all aspects of the Hy-Chi kitchen.
  • Maintain adherence to hygiene and dress guidelines.
  • Follow company policies and store guidelines.
  • Report to work on time and as scheduled.

Secondary Duties And Responsibilities

  • Check rice as time permits.
  • Take customer orders at the Hy-Chi counter when needed.
  • Assist in other store areas as needed.
  • Perform other related duties and projects as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Worker Characteristics

  • Ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Basic math skills: add, subtract, multiply, divide.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, request supplies orally or in writing.

Education And Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; training provided.

Physical Requirements

  • Lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, 10 pounds constantly.
  • Visual requirements include seeing from more than 20 inches to less than 20 feet, with or without correction, and color vision.
  • Physical activities include balancing, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, finger dexterity, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Working Conditions

This role involves exposure to noise, temperature extremes, and cleaning chemicals. It is a fast-paced environment with deadlines.

The starting hourly wage is $12.00 to $15.00 depending on experience.
