Job summary

Oberlin College is seeking a full-time HVACR Technician to maintain and repair a wide range of HVAC, refrigeration, and water treatment systems on campus. This is a 40-hour-per-week, Monday–Friday position, from 8:00 a.m.

to 4:30 p.m., reporting to the Assistant Director, Facilities Stewardship. The incumbent will perform preventive maintenance, diagnostic testing, and repair work on complex systems, including boilers, chillers, DX units, and BAS controls, ensuring reliable campus operations.

Qualifications

• Certified HVAC/refrigeration mechanic with Universal CFC and 8+ years experience.
• Experience with BAS controls and troubleshooting.
• Able to lift up to 50 lbs and occasionally more with assistance.
• Valid Ohio driver’s license and willingness to travel on campus if needed.

Responsibilities

• Install, operate, maintain, and repair HVAC, refrigeration, and water treatment equipment.
• Read blueprints and interpret diagrams and job specs.
• Use BAS, DDC, and pneumatic controls for systems troubleshooting.
• Complete work orders and communicate issues via radio.
• Follow safety regulations and wear PPE at all times.

Job Summary

Join a team that keeps a nationally recognized campus running! Oberlin College is seeking a full-time HVACR Technician to maintain and repair a wide range of HVAC , refrigeration, and water treatment systems. This is a full-time (40 hours per week) Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM, Service Employee position, reporting to the Assistant Director, Facilities Stewardship. Overtime and holiday work could be available for campus support.

Responsibilities

The Incumbent will have general responsibility for the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of HVAC , Refrigeration and Water Treatment equipment for properties owned or maintained by the College in support of the educational goals of the institution, and will perform the following (but not limited to the following) specific duties:

Essential Job Functions

• Perform service, maintenance and repair on fractional HP, high, medium, low and ultra low commercial refrigeration equipment (refrigerators, freezers, scientific refrigerators and freezers, ice machines, soft serve machines, walk-ins, reach-ins and beverage chiller systems.
• Familiarity with TXV’s, reversing valves, differential pressures and site glass operations.
• Skilled in brazing, soldering and pipefitting.
• Maintenance and repair of Geothermal systems, including water-to-water and water-to-air heat pumps;
• Triage Commercial Variable Refrigerant Flow ( VRF ) systems including Mitsubishi City Multi VRF technology to help determine if repairs can be done in house or a contractor needs to consulted. Perform preventative maintenance on the same;
• Maintenance and repair of chillers, centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, evaporators, condensers, DDC and pneumatic valves, associated pumps, and cooling towers;
• Maintenance and repair of DX AC units, window AC units, including hermetic, digital scroll compressors, expansion valves, capillary tubes, and coils;
• Maintenance and repair of HVAC related air compressors, receivers, and air dryers;
• Maintenance and repair of low pressure steam systems, F&T traps, vacuum and condensate pumps, PRV stations, tube and shell, and plate heat exchangers, hydronic systems;
• Maintenance and repair of low‑pressure boilers, safety valves and controls, low water cut‑offs;
• Proficient knowledge of Direct Digital Control and pneumatic heating controls;
• Maintenance and repair of large industrial AHUs, VAV boxes, and ERUs, heat wheels, controls, face and bypass dampers, motors, bearings, coils, timers, control panels, and evaporative coolers.
• Maintain and use Building Automation Systems ( BAS ) programs as necessary;
• Read and correctly interpret and use blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and job specifications;
• Safely operate and maintain a variety of diagnostic hand and power tools including vacuum pump, test/calibration equipment, reclamation equipment, and fabrication tools;
• Follow all OSHA , Federal, State, Local and College safety regulations, codes and policies, including proper use of personal protective equipment ( PPE );
• Complete and turn in work orders as noted in the work order procedure;
• Carry a radio for communication at all times to provide coverage for immediate issues that may arise on campus as well as for normal communications of work related duties.

Marginal Job Functions

• Test as required and chemically treat boiler, condenser, cooling tower and natatorium waters.
• Fill water treatment and softening tanks; add chemicals and solutions to condition and treat water as required to maintain the proper chemical balance according to prescribed procedures.
• Perform conductivity, alkalinity, phosphate, silica, sulfite and other tests. Maintain testing logs and provide accurate reporting of the same.
• Effectively respond to and handle various HVACR emergencies as appropriate, and, when necessary, refer situations to a manager;
• Maintain all college vehicles that are assigned to your responsibility in a clean and neat manner;
• Safeguard all college property/vehicles which is under your responsibility;
• Operate all college property in a safe manner;
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Must be a presently certified HVAC /Refrigeration mechanic holding a Universal CFC certification with at least eight (8) years of practical experience in HVAC /Refrigeration and can prove the same with proper affidavits;
• able to demonstrate refrigerant evacuation; exposure to low and medium pressure boiler operations;
• knowledge of steam and steam distribution systems.
• General knowledge of water testing and treatment; experience and exposure to water treatment equipment and methods.
• Candidate must have basic familiarity with the usage of computers, computer software and internet browsing;
• proficient knowledge and understanding of Building Automation ( BAS ) and control systems to include but not limited to Schneider Electric, Siemens Apogee, Desigo, and BacNet interfaces;
• adept computer/instrumentation ability used in diagnosing and programming HVACR equipment;
• strong reasoning ability and troubleshooting skills;
• multitasking with the capability of dealing with a full range of HVACR problems and situations;
• ability to communicate clearly and concisely;
• ability to work in/outdoors in confined and/or high spaces, under a variety of working conditions including inclement weather;
• ability to regularly lift, carry, push, pull and/or move up to 50 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move more than 80 lbs. with assistance;
• work is performed while standing, sitting, stooping, and/or walking and requires bending, squatting, climbing, crawling and reaching;
• requires the use of hands for grasping as well as fine manipulations;
• required to have and maintain a valid Ohio driver’s license and ability to meet and maintain the College’s insurability standards;
• ability to understand complex system drawings and specifications and mathematical calculations;
• willingness to participate in training classes and seminars to improve job skills;
• demonstrated ability to utilize the proper equipment and safety procedures to install, maintain and repair HVAC /Refrigeration systems;
• demonstrated ability to work well in a complex organizational structure responding to the needs of a diverse multicultural educational community;
• demonstrated ability to work alone without direct supervision as well as work with trainees, contractors, municipal employees and others.
• Must be medically approved for respirator use and fit testing. Favorable references, including a good attendance record.

Desired Qualifications

Journeyman classification as a Pipe Fitter, Steam Fitter or Tinner. HVACR NATE Certification. Exposure to other commercial BAS systems a plus.

Any offer made to an external candidate is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a comprehensive background investigation and pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol testing.

External Candidates are subject to a physical/fit-for-duty examination to ensure the physical demands of the job can be met.

This Pay Grade 9 Service Employee position will be filled at a base rate of $35.82 per hour, or the appropriate transfer rate for internal candidates. A generous benefits package is included, which provides a tuition remission benefit for qualifying family members and employee.
